I thought the term 'lariat' was a later 19th century term one of those cowboy words derived from the Spanish. Had no idea it was used during the war. I find that interesting. Perhaps ol' John was making a little money on the side especially with the weapons.

I am with Michael.....I think he had a little military surplus biz going on the side.....no one could be that careless.....but then,....

....course, we are talking about the 1st Lousiana. There is always the possibility he lost it partying on Bourban St.

Nowadays, (if you have ever been there) alot of clothing still gets disgarded down there (it is so hot you know)....

and from what I read it wasn't much different back in Antebellum "Nawlins".
