  • Cavalry Lecture

    Gents,

Saw this and thought of my cavalry friends who might find it useful. The first part deals with uniform supply and is interesting if you want to see it. The cavalry subject matter starts at about the 30 minute mark. It is a very academic lecture but has some pretty interesting stuff that I think a lot of you boys might find of value.

Session 5. Manufacturing, Medicine, and Death Between Home Front and Battlefield: Clothing Manufacture in the Civil War Era Sarah Jones Weicksel (University of Chicago) A Blot on the Army: Veterinary Care in the Union Cavalry, 1861–1865 David J. Gerleman (Papers of Abraham Lincoln) From Bureaucracy to Efficiency: Technological Reform of the U.S. Army Medical Bureau and Soldier Care during the Civil War Pt. 1 Jeffrey Larrabee (National Guard Bureau)

    Re: Cavalry Lecture

    Thank you, Michael.

I found this quite interesting and I thought that Dr. Gerleman did a good job in pointing out some points that are rarely discussed in our study of the war. While his lecture was fairly "scholastic" in it's layout, it is near and dear to me as several years ago I prepared a presentation entitled, "The Importance of the Horse in the 19th Century. I wish I had had Dr. Gerleman's data to incorporate into my talk.

While the hardships of the war were great on the men and women of the time, it has always been the case that throughout history, those hardships are magnified when considering the beast of burden used in the the day. The destruction of so many horses in the application of war was a tragedy, indeed, but one that is often overlooked.

Thanks again for posting this link.
