  • Still another Fed cavalryman

    Another ebay gem.......

Note: Though touched-up after the war, which destroys the integrity of some of the equipment, I like the young Negro orderly (I suggest an orderly since most cavalryman- even Negro ones would likely not wear gaiters).
This saddle looks "brand new" to me. Its crips leather and it shines so.

Sometimes, it may seem that posting these never ending photos of Federal cavalryman is a bit redundant, monotonous and of little value. However, even though there is not much here to comment on perhaps someday with more knowledge and new technology there will be some real value to be gleaned even from what appears now as the most repetitive photos. In any event, since these photos are often held in private hands the opportunity to make them public does a lot to preserve them for future research.

My thanks to Mark Susnis for sending it to me/us.

      Jerry,
While my eyes are not what they used to be, I believe I do see a breast collar on this one.

Also, I agree with you as to posting more of these. There are much fewer good photos out there of mounted examples and we need all we can get. Good post, Ken and thanks to Mark S.

      thx,

        Ken,

Thanks for sharing! They have plenty of value, so please keep on posting them. Most of the folks on here are into CS stuff, but I for one appreciate seeing any fed stuff.

That is one ugly, short coupled, no whither horse! The saddle does indeed look brand new. It looks like a catalog example. I find it curious that the darky is wearing gaiters, or whatever it is, when the photo is ID'd according to the writing as late war.

        Take care,

          Ken-

I would agree with everyone's comments and add that the more eyes you have looking at a picture the more of a chance someone will notice some small detail of interest!

          Thanks!
