  • Federal cavalry man

    Hallo!

I debated where to put this, but figured here would get more views than in "Images" maybe...

George McCoon, company saddler, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, Fort Scott, Kansas (aka Fort Scott, Missouri) circa 1863/1865.. in front of the Fort Scott stables.

I have seen this picture one other time, but it's nice to see it here, and in a bigger format. The front trooper has some interesting things going on. His saddle bags are NOT regulation, his haversack is quite large, and totally stuffed, and his blanket is rolled a little funny. That and he has his greatcoat on the front of the saddle...definitely loaded for action!

Tom Craig - Do you think that the fact that he's identified as the saddler might account for the extra gear?? Perhaps carring repair/replacement parts?

It almost looks like the trooper in back is trying to steady the front horse?

It appears he has sword, pistol and carbine on his left side but I can't enlarge the picture enough to tell for certain.

                      A nice image indeed.
The photo is apparently a tintype, a mirror image, so everything is reversed. Notice the way his sack coat is buttoned and where the lead strap leads. He has flopped his saber over to the right, next to his holster, to make it appear to be on the left in the photo.
