  • Ordnance Records of the 5th South Carolina Cavalry

As I have said in the past, South Carolina cavalry records are hard to find. Many of these regiments were formed in 1863 from various independent battalions and squadrons so records are scattered around. Here is a good mid war ordnance record, Kerr Revolvers and Austrian Rifles....

    CSR of Lt. Col. Jeffords

Ordnance Stores issued Oct 29th 1863 at Charleston SC.

    100 Revolving Pistols
    100 Powder Flasks
    100 Cleaning Rods
    100 Nipple Keys
    500 Spare Cones
    20 Moulds
    20 Main Springs
    20 Trigger Springs
    10000 Cartridges
    2 Coils Halter Rope
    300 Haversacks
    150 Canteens
    200 Austrian Rifles
    20000 Cartridges Cal .54

    Will,
You mentioned Kerr revolvers in your introduction to the list, but the list just says "100 Revolving Pistols." Did you accidentally leave the word "Kerr" out of the description?

I also like seeing the coils of halter rope. I just learned how to eye splice and have started using hemp rope on some of my halters for later war usage.

    Thanks again for the post!

      Chris,

Can tell by the revolver accessories that they are Kerrs, other records that mention Kerr's have those same accessories in those quantities as well. 1 Powder flask, cleaning rod, and nipple key per revolver, 5 spare cones, and 1 main spring, trigger spring, and mould per 5 revolvers.

        Will,
Thanks again as that gives me the clues to understand what I am reading. I may not post often, but I love all of the ordnance records you share.
