Can anyone shed any light on the type of material from which period carpet was constructed. Does that term refer to what we call area rugs today? Is there any contemporary material that is similar? I am referring to that material issued as saddle padding in the western theater.

    Greg,
FHW made/wove several ingrain carpets a couple years ago that several of us bought to use as saddle blankets. While I won't be able to give you much on construction, but the carpet is basically a thick woolen material that is woven to have a pattern on one side and reverse on another. Pat had information on his website and might still have info on the carpets. I can tell you it is a heavy material. I hope more people will chime in.
