Re: Interesting Confederate Cavalryman
Interesting pic indeed, Will. From what I can see, he looks to be totally civilian attired except for the Whitney.
On another note, have you ever run across any returns on the 16th Confederate/12th Mississippi Cavalry? I'm curious as to how they were outfitted and armed.Larry Morgan

Re: Interesting Confederate Cavalryman
Larry,
Here is what I have found after a quick search. Records are pretty sketchy.
Issued June 4th 1864:
300 Cartridge Boxes
300 Cap Pouches
30 Cavalry Sabers and Belts
163 Saddle Blankets-Moss
21000 Musket Ball Cartridges cal .69
2000 Enfield Rifle Cartridges cal. .58
2000 Miss Rifle Cartridges cal .54
3000 Miss Rifle Cartridges cal .54 for carbines
Also what was to become Company A was issued 100 sabers in January 1864. Most of the companies of the regiment had been organized in 1863 as part of the "supporting force" for the conscription bureau, then put together as a regiment in April/May 1864.
