  • The "Infamous" Mounted Canteen Cork...

I recently came across a contract request from the Philadelphia Depot later in the war that requested an additional order of 5,000 “Mounted Canteen Corks”. Using the resources I have and the famous Mike O’Donnell book, i was not able to find anything other than the same mention of this peculiar order. Does anyone know what a "Mounted Canteen Cork" is?

Interesting concept...My mind goes wild with possibilities on how a cork would be uniquely different for mounted soldiers. Thoughts?

    Steven,

Maybe it means with fittings, i.e. the metal fittings to enable the cork to be attached to the canteen, as in the following modern quote I found on the web "mounted with K Metal Fittings".

I'd be pretty sure that by "mounted" they are referring to adding the hardware to the cork. But it's a lot more fun to think about some special cavalry specific canteen cork, without which we've all been doing it wrong for years! lol

Tom, that was my first thought too, but the announcement has an order of regular canteen corks that were associated with "complete canteens". Still possible given the context but that is what steered me to a different direction.
