  • 1st New York Veteran Cavalry

I've recently learned that I have an ancestor who served in Company D of the 1st New York Veteran Cavalry. The New York State Military Museum has some information, but I'm looking for more (books, for example) and my Google searches for more information on the unit are... well, lacking. I keep getting a lot of hits for the 1st New York Volunteer Cavalry instead.

And for added hilarity, both the 1st NY Vets and the 1st NY Vols were in the same brigade for awhile. Because why not?

I'm planning to take a trip to the National Archives to dig up what I can, but I'd like to sate some of my curiosity in the meantime. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

They definitely are a fun one to study. As far as equipment I can tell you that Company D had primarily Burnside Carbines, Remington Pistols, and still carried the old heavy cavalry sabers. However, they only show one carbine sling in that company (interesting).
