  • Alabama Cavalry question...tournament

I"m hoping that some of you may be able to help. I've run across something in an article entitled "The Knights of the Lance in the South", written by Hanson Hiss in "Outing" magazine in 1898 that has a section that says "The records of an Alabama cavalry regiment contain an amusing, albeit pathetic, account of a tourney [tournament] which took place in their winter quarters along the banks of the Potomac...."

He does not document this in any notes, and I am wondering if any of you are familiar with this, or know what regiment, and where the information came from.

    Thank you.

    Re: Alabama Cavalry question...tournament

    Colleen,

According to Stewart Sifakis' Compendium of the Confederate Armies: Alabama, the only Alabama cavalry unit to operate in the eastern theatre was the 4th Alabama Cavalry Battalion, commanded by Captain Andrew P. Love. Here is what Sifakis states:
Organized with three companies from August to September 1863. Field consolidated with Cavalry Battalion, Phillips' Georgia Legion, from May 1864 to July 11, 1864. Merged into the Jeff. Davis Mississippi Cavalry Legion on July 11, 1864. (Order not carried out until November 1864.)
Battles: The Wilderness (May 5-6, 1864)
Spotsylvania Court House (May 8-21, 1864)
    North Anna (May 23-26, 1864)
    Cold Harbor (June 1-3, 1864)
    Petersburg Siege (June 1864-April 1865)
    Hope this may help...

Thanks...that's at least a lead, and I'll see if I can find something else.
