  • The Photographic History of the Civil War, The Cavalry

Okay Gang, in the The Photographic History of the Civil War, The Cavalry on page 309 the image: “Mounts For All the Cavalrymen” is captioned and part of it states that “Infantry boys are evidently fraternizing with their comrades of the cavalry at an advanced post.” Has anyone ever noticed that the men in this photo are all infantry? At least 9 of the 39 men in his photo are wearing frock coats most are wearing state or short jackets and a few have sack coats on… I was wondering are the (mis)identified cavalry horses in the background possibly a part of a mounted infantry regiment or possibly staff horses? Just something to kick around, if I could post the image for discussion I would, if anyone has a copy of this image and can post it for better discussion I would appreciate it, if not and you have access to the book take a look and put in your two cents… Anyway are they mtd. infantry or cavalry?
    Thanks, TEH

Zack, beware of some of the captions, such as the Iowa fellows mislabeled as Forrest's men. You've probably noticed that image and scratched your head already.
