  • Authentic Saddle Manufactures

I was searching the posts and could not locate any information on period saddle manufacturers. I am looking for a pre war saddle officer rig, private purchase or issue.
Any help would be greatly appriciated

          Re: Authentic Saddle Manufactures

          Greetings, Chris!

How "pre-war" does it need it to be? I have a complete set of Grimsley-McClellan hybrid officer's equipments for sale that I made for my own use for the 120th Manassas event. Set includes saddle (w/quilted seat and brass moldings, and all fittings), bridle (w/cavesson, attached by crossed nose piece and eagle rosette in center backed by an enameled scalloped-edge safe, as well as a plain brownband; dragoon-type curb bit w/Virginia state seal bosses and two sets of reins) fitted with beveled-edge dragoon-type horseshoe buckles; enameled breastplate w/detachable running martingale; and halter w/lead strap. For more detailed description and photos, contact me directly at neocelt@earthlink.net. Incidentally, there were no "issue" officer's equips.; officers had to purchase their own tack.

          Cheers,

            Mr. Nichols,

I would be interested in exchanging information as far as the what/how concerning your construction. I would be interested in building my own tack and I do have a little practice in leather work.

i suggest checking out the ordanance manual. there is all the measurements for the leather for your saddle.

                Re: Authentic Saddle Manufactures

It is true the ordinance manual has the specifications and dimensions for the saddles and horse equipements. It does not tell all, for example have constrution details are absent. Nor does it give complete details as to the sizes, shapes etc of the saddle hardware. What are the dimensins of the rings and staples? Just how thick was "heavy harness leather"? What size thread? How many stitches per inch? These are but a few of the details missing from the Ordinance manual. It is imperative to examine original artifacts in addition to the manual.
