For the record, this man is not carrying a Sharps carbine. He appears to have a Merrill.

I think many of us get nostalgic about the past and like to think somehow that the world our mid-19th century ancestors lived in was free from many of the "sins" of our present world. Truth is, the more you study the past the more you realize that there's really nothing new under the sun. They struggled with many (most) of the same problems we do today.

                Re: Jaguar-Skin Trousers

Thanks very much for this discussion of my post on Captain Richardson's trousers at my blog Walking the Berkshires - and for edifying me as to the likely manufacturer of his carbine. I have updated the post accordingly.

In days of old I was a trooper under Troy Sorbello (later Lieutentant, 9th VA Cav.) and have posted on that experience. Some of you may remember Troy; he is sorely missed. Should you care to read about my first foray into reenacting with Troy when we lived in upstate NY, the link is at http://greensleeves.typepad.com/berk...es_or_net.html

                  Re: Jaguar-Skin Trousers

                  Excellent Blog and article Tim.

If I might add fuel to the fire, I believe the material used the chaps and pistol holsters is block printed velvet and not genuine animal skin. There are several examples of velvet printed with similar animal spots found in extant garments from the 1700s. Just my opinion.

I really appreciate the research you put into this photograph rather than the usual "that wasn't common so let's not talk about it". Great job and keep up the work Tim.

Not to be argumentative, but jaguars did range into East Texas in the 1860's. There is also an image of Sam Houston wearing a jaguar skin vest from this period as well.

Can't some of our good friends send us some tobacco? We intend to "hang up our stockings." if they can't send tobacco, please send us the seed, and we will commence preparing the ground; for we mean to defend this place till h-ll freezes over, and then fight the Yankees on the ice.

I don't think you're being argumentative, I'm just adding fuel to the fire. When I first saw an image of the block printed fabric I thought it to be genuine Jaguar skin as well, until I saw the actual garment and saw it was velvet.

I'm not say it's not Jaguar, I just think it's fabric. I could be wrong...wouldn't be the first or the last time I'm wrong.
