    Re: Jaguar-Skin Trousers

    Hallo!

I do not know the details, but it was in Giles County, southeastern Virgina.

I do concede the point about escaped and let-loosed "exotic pets," however, I think there might be too many "cougars" getting free than I expected, suspected, believed were actually in captivity.

At any rate, we shall see, as nature and environment has a "way...." :)

Peter you may be interested in this little bit. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina close to Latta Plantation Park. It was here two summers ago that there was a sighting of a "six foot long" cat from nose to tail tip. Growing up here locally I always heard stories from local folks about panthers and pumas from the depression era. They always told me that they would find magled livestock and dogs. I have wondered since that latest local sighting if this cat was part of a leftover family, a drifter, or a released pet. Anyways this goes to show you that historically there have been big cats local to the east.

I have seen prints here in Arizona when I was a child with my boy scout troop. Never have seen one in the wild though.

Don, I think that report about the big cat in Arizona in 1998 was actually just south of you, to the mountain range directly West of the Sunset Point Rest area on the I-17. If I remember right, some local ranchers were finding their stock in a very unpleasant condition (by this I mean they were ripped to s***!).

          HI Martin,

I didn't realize that it was that close (for those of you not in AZ, sunset Point is about 35-45 miles south of where I live in central AZ)

As far as extinction goes with the big cats. Not a real problem here with the mountain lions. A while back (3-4) years ago there were mountain bikers getting attacked by one mountain lion in the foot hills behind Los Angeles.

When the 1st CA goes out on one of our wilderness scouting events. We have to look out for a few critters. Mountain Lions, Bears, Rattlesnakes, Javelina and Scorpions to name a few.

Like most wild animals they don't want to be around man, so if given a chance they will take off away from folks.

One of the biggest cats I ever saw was just west of the rest area at Sunset Point. (There's gold in them thar hills, too.)

Probably one of the best period moments we ever had. Cremony's book and Masich's book both mention encounters with snakes and scorpians.

That snake was a beauty though.

Yep, Although I don't want to experience that again;). It was a close call , especially being out where we were on Clear Creek.

Good stuff though. That snake was about 2 years old (2 -3 beads on his rattle) and about 2 ft long, and full of venom. Would have been neat to have him as a pet! (although not a good idea to take a wild animal out of it's habitat)

Well, you must tell me, baby
How your head feels under somethin' like that
Under your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, you look so pretty in it
Honey, can I jump on it sometime?
                    Yes, I just wanna see
If it's really that expensive kind
You know it balances on your head
                    Just like a mattress balances
                    On a bottle of wine

Well, if you wanna see the sun rise

We'll go out and see it sometime
We'll both just sit there and stare
                    Me with my belt
                    Wrapped around my head
                    And you just sittin' there
In your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, I asked the doctor if I could see you
It's bad for your health, he said
                    Yes, I disobeyed his orders
                    I came to see you
But I found him there instead
You know, I don't mind him cheatin' on me
But I sure wish he'd take that off his head
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, I see you got a new boyfriend
You know, I never seen him before
                    Well, I saw him
                    Makin' love to you
You forgot to close the garage door
You might think he loves you for your money
But I know what he really loves you for

Lions and Jaguars and Bears, OH MY!

Well we are ahving more and more documented Cougar sitings here in Texas as well as ther evidcene, even as far east as San Antonio and Austin! I have a friend how is a security guard on a large tract of land SE of Austin and he recently found track of an adult and at least three young! Recently in NW San Antonio they had to close a park when they heard the distinctive sound. They never found the animal, but they did find tracks! Most of these animals still view human's as predetors and avoid them as much as possible.

On that note we have black bears making a comeback as well. Naturally in the West Texas mountains and in the east by taking some of those in Arkansas and Lousiana and trying to speed up "repopulation". It was figured they were on there way and we should help it along, kind of have mixed feelings about...but...

one this topic, anybody got the information or quote on that guy from the 8th Texas Cvalry that was noted as having a black bear skin for a blanket strapped to the pommel of his saddle? A person could ALOMST (note I said almost) create a rather disturbing Texas Cavalry impression just from this ONE thread alone! LOL!

                          Re: Jaguar-Skin Trousers

I just watched Antiques Roadshow last night (the same episode that had the canteen from the 1st Alabama), and they had chairs made by some artist in Texas and they could not give a price quote on one of the chairs because the material used was made from "Texas Jaguar" which is an endangered species, so it cannot be resold. When I saw the chair material it looked exactly like these trousers. So being that this solider was from a Texas unit, it might make sense that they are made from Texas Jaguar. I would however also believe what Chris Daley says, it may just be fabric.
