  • Pack Saddles

    Hello All,

As some of you already know, I'm currently working on a cavalry companion-piece to the CRRC. Although I'm being aided by some very erudite fellows, there are some topics for which we're in sore need of help. This post (and a couple to follow) are an attempt to cast a bigger net for said help. :-)

Period records for the Cav Corps of the AoP talk a lot about "pack horses," even after the big 1863 experiment. My first question regards the saddles themselves and the methods of packing them.

Does anybody here have any information on the pack saddles purchased by the US Army during the war, specifically the pattern?

Some records suggest that the "pack horses" were saddled with standard Macs. Has anyone seen anything to suggest how a Mac is rigged for packing? I'm familiar with the methods used by the 1890's on the saw-buck pack saddles -- diamond hitch, etc etc.. Does anyone have period information on how this could be done on a Mac?

    Thanks in advance,
    John Tobey
