  • Getting back into CW Reenacting

    Well,

After an 13 year break I am looking to get back into reenacting with a good hardcore cavalry unit in the VA area (I formarly did infantry years ago when I was 16-17). I am putting gear together now, and am looking for gear for an early 1863 impression. I just picked up a Garret Sharps that was mint - never fired with a very low SN for $1100 (this is the only half way accurate sharps copy that I know of). I have looked over the inventory of arms for the 4th VA Cav, and by Nov of '63 they were well armed with Sharps Carbines (looks like 2 to 3 sharps for each of every other type of weapon). I was looking at Border States Leathers Richmond Depot Saddles. My great-great-great grandfather fought with the 4th in the Chesterfield Light Dragoons, and joined up in January of '63. He was captured Oct 9th, 1864 at Fishers Hill and sent to Point Lookout.

Critter. Company. They're in GA, but that would be my suggestion, FWIW.

Anyone know if Nick at Heartland house is still making saddles? He was making some of the best saddles I had seen at one time.

Don't think so. He is/has moved to Ireland. If you drop him an email come up with a good title so his spam filter doesnt get you.

As you say William, he was getting ready to move to Ireland last I heard too, but I'm not sure if he's actually made the big move yet or not.

Of course, he did have a real fine set of Officer's Horse Equips., for sale a few months back:

Good advice on Nick's spam filter btw., you need a good title to run that particular blockade! ;)

I think John Sweeny snatched that up a little while back.

                  Hi Chris ,
This is for everyone else since we have already talked. The return you speak of for the 4th Va is an odd one as most all other returns says the exact opposite, IE more muzzle loaders than sharps. Stuart's chief ord officer even says in a letter to Richmond that the 58 cal is the cal most common in the division, I have posted this letter somewhere on this forum under some discussion. Where did you see this report on arms? You're right the only sharps that is a very good copy is the Garret.
We love to get you to come out soon and we have enough gear to loan you as well.
Your grand father was probably captured at the Toms Brook fight which was that date. The rebs under Rosser didn't do so good. Some days I could show you where the 4th was.
                  Sincerely, Todd Kern
