Re: Cavalry at 2008 events ?

    Fellas,
This is how my year is going to shape up I hope !
May 30,31 June 1st Picketts Mill Yes
    June 6,7,8 Brandy Station Maybe
    June 27,28,29 Gettysburg Yes /Maybe
    September 27,28,29 Marmadukes Raid Yes
October 24,25 26 Unison VA Yes/Maybe if I can get something moved around

The Maybe's will depend on a trip to Italy this summer that my wife won. We have not recieved the dates on that yet. This may be the only time I get to go there, so I will have to pass on the events it may land on. I would bea lucky man if they don't interfer with each other .

All five of these events are out of state. I might be traveling alone to get to there to the VA ones.

So is the Unison event different the Rob Hodge Preservation March that is taking place November 1 and 2??? I see there is both Federal and Confederate cavalry planned for Robs March. Here is a link to the Preservation Marches website http://www.cwreenactors.com/preservation2008/intro.html

        Dan,
I thought they were the same. If the November date is the correct one then I can make it for sure. I was going by what some one said the last weekend in October. Are you planning on going ?

Jerry, it looks very inticing. Right now I dont own my own horse, so I would need a loaner or a rented horse. Seems a little ways away from now to say for sure, but I do want to get out East to ride with the 1st Maine guys at least once this year, and this looks like the best opportunity.

            Dan,
We would be happy to have you ride with the 1st ME! Rental horses are available for most events and can be lined up pretty easily.

Not so easy to line up is the Welbourne event...I don't want to step on any toes or get in the middle of anything, but I will try to explain the confusion on the dates.

This event has taken place over the years in different formats, but the same general location. The most recent version of the event (alternatively known by some as the Hodge March, the Unison ride, and the Welbourne event) took place the last weekend in Oct, 2006, and the 1st weekend in Oct in 2007. The two years had different hosts and a slightly different focus.

2006 featured US and CS cav, and CS infantry. The participants did the march and stopped in Unision to take part in their preservation soiree before moving on to Welbourne.

2007 featured US and CS cavalry and infantry. The infantry and CS cavalry largely stuck to the Welbourne property (which is huge) and the US cav did the march (10-12 miles one way). It also featured more of a tactical action once we reached Welbourne, but no tie in with the soiree in Unision.

So...to wrap up, the two hosts from 2006-2007 appear to currently have rival or perhaps simply separate event ideas in mind for the same land at nearly the same time. I for one hope that we can get some more details from the hosts and figure out exactly what is going on so we can get one great event out of it. Either way for my money both the 2006 & 2007 events were the best cavalry events I have done in my reenacting career.

            Take care,

              Gents,
This years event in Unison is indeed the same as the Rob Hodge event. I mis-spoke when I mentioned the last weekend in October as being the dates for the event. Sorry for the confusion.
