    Commercial Forage Cap

    Hello everyone . I have a question that Iam hoping to be answered by as many Union Army cavalrymen reenactors as possible . The following website XXXXX has reproduction commercial forage caps and Iam wanting to purchase one however I would like to know if there are any cavalry reenactors who use them or if they are popular for cavalry reenactors . The website does say that they were popular for both enlisted men and officers and just like the kepi I was told on another website that they were a private purchase item . Regardless Iam wanting to know if they are used among Union cavalry reenactors and if in fact they are popular . I realize that there are cavalry reenacting groups that allow the use of either kepis or forage caps for enlisted men . It is the use of commercial forage caps among enlisted men for cavalry that I would like to know about .

    Hallo!

    IMHO...

    First, it depends upon what research and documentation shows for the time and place of the unit you are portraying as your impression.
    Second, it depends upon the nature of the impression or persona that you have created as to whether that man's druthers, personal tastes, access to commercial sources, and the free dollars to buy a "private purchase" cap works or does not work.

    And maybe throw in a "third" in regards to what standards for impressions your unit has created and enforces.

    I would not, for me, look to what is "popular" among reenactors or even living historians as a replacement for what is historically researched and documented for one's impression.

    Others' mileage will vary...

        I have one of these (a Bent & Bush private-purchase forage cap, made by He Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned On This Forum), which I just happen to be thinking about selling. Size is 23 3/4". It has a ventilator installed.

        If there is any interest expressed, I will probably let it go.

            Gentlemen thank you for writing back to me . I really do appreciate it . What you wrote was very helpful to me . I quess what Iam trying to say is are there any Union cavalry reenactors who are allowed to use the commercial forage cap as an alternative to either the type I or type II federal government issued forage caps in your reenacting groups . I was always curious about that and wanted to find out . By the way thank you for your offer but I think that your cap is too big for me .
