  • Headquarters Flag, Artillery Brigade, 8th Corps Cedar Creek

    Gents,

My research in the hardcopy world, online and on this forum has not clarified my confusion on this issue. Somebody help!

WHAT WOULD THE BRIGADE FLAGS HAVE LOOKED LIKE AT CEDAR CREEK IN 1864?

In particular the Artillery Brigade HQ flags.... considering at Cedar Creek they were the Army of the Shenandoah and the Army of W. Virginia (8th Corps).
Did they follow the order of May 12, 1863 setting up the 6' red triangle with corps insignia in white? or was that JUST Army of the Potomac?
See flags link at http://www.artilleryreserve.org/ for images.

I am interested particularly in the 8th Corps. Was this the ONLY 8th Corps? Or was there an 8th Corps in the Army of W. Virginia and another somewhere else say in the Army of the Potomac? I had been confused to this point through some reading that was contradictory?

I AM ALSO interested in a Corps HQ or Corps Division HQ flag for the 8th, 6th, or 19th Corps at Cedar Creek. Again, did they follow the order of May 12, 1863 or was that just the Army of the Potomac?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

Re: Headquarters Flag, Artillery Brigade, 8th Corps Cedar Creek

    Chris,
I am a member of the 2D Conn Vol Heavy Artillery, that fought at Cedar Creek in 1864 with Wright's Sixth Corps. Our unit was in Rickett's Division (1st) and Upton's Brigade (2d). I am attaching a print of Sixth Corps flags that I found while looking for facsimilies of the flags to print a flyer for our Cold Harbor reenactment that our unit hosted in Woodbury, CT last year. I have seen a picture elsewhere that confirms the print for the flag that our unit fought under. I hope this is of some assistance to you.

      Randy,

Thank you for the info. Yes, that follows the regulations followed by the Army of the Potomac after May 1863.

In your research did you see anything that stated they in fact used that system at Cedar Creek?
Just curious if it followed over into the Army of the Shenandoah and the Army of W. Virginia?

Just crossing my t's and dotting my i's.

      Thanks again!

          Thanks Dan....

          Here's from that website...
"Other Union armies and military departments adopted similar systems for distinguishing flags, but no Army-wide regulation governing their design was published during the Civil War. Nevertheless, the shoulder sleeve insignia and organizational flags of today's US Army can trace their origins back to these corps insignia and flags."

So my question.... what did they look like at Cedar Creek since they weren't Army of the Potomac?
          Ugggghhhhh...

          Thanks again...

Re: Headquarters Flag, Artillery Brigade, 8th Corps Cedar Creek

            Chris,
I am reading "The Old 19th...." by Richard Smith. The 2D Conn Heavies orginally was mustered into service in 1862 as the 19th CVI and while in Washington City was redesignated to a heavy artillery unit, the 2D Conn. They were assigned to the Sixth Corps and had their baptism of fire at Cold Harbor in June 1864. In sept/oct 1864, the Sixth Corps was transfered to the Army of the Shenandoah, thus being involved at Cedar Creek. I know they maintained their corps badges on their uniforms as evidenced by a diary note of one soldier wounded in the battle, who acutally spoke w/ Gen Early, who still believed that the Sixth Corps was near Petersburg. He was reassured that they were at Cedar Creek because he had the red cross on top of his forage cap. I cannot say for certain that their flags were changed when the Sixth was assigned to the A of S, but I would think that they were. The Sixth was then reassigned to the A of P in December of 1864 for the duration of the war. I hope this is of some help. If I come along any further information, I will surely pass it along.
