My 3-pounder (or grapeshot) came from the Slaughter Pen area when it was private property.

I measured my ball with a pair of calipers, and the largest dimension was something like 3.375".

Mike: The gun says Gen'l D. H. Hill Yorktown and the soldiers are Federal Zouaves occupying the CS works.

            Thanks Bob,
I didn't think they were Rebs! The baggy pants and fezz's were a dead give away! I know that CS had zouaves also but not in the artillery, I far as I know Zouaves were limited to Infantry only with a couple of other exceptions: french looking cav regt that were called "Hussars"; and french "Chasseurs" in the Infantry too.

Another item to look at is the soldier standing w/rifle not a musket. I can't tell what type of rifle whether a 2 band Enfield or MS rifle or 1855 HF rifle. could be any of them. Although the bayonet has a curve to it I'd guess Enfield rifle w/M1856 bayonet fixed.

Actually Mike, these guys are indeed Chasseurs, and not Zouaves. A companion photo shows them by their distinctive uniform coats to be the 1st New York Independent Battalion, otherwise known as Les Enfants Perdus (the Lost Children). On 5/5/62, they were cited in orders to be the official garrison of Gloucester Point. Their military record from beginning to end was about as bad as it gets. Some serious losers!

Another cool pic! Bob you Rock! keep pulling them photos out from who knows where! I'd like to see your library sometime!

More details than the first along w/some of the usual suspects! This image must have been really early as several are wearing havelocks; the same guy holding a part w/ a bill-less kepi; white pants, red baggy pants, the tall chasseur hat w/pom, the cool jackets w/million and 1 buttons, gaiters, greaves, socks, cool sleeping/liesure caps. I could go on and on! Thanks again Bob!
