          Re: flag help

          Drew,

Though rather incomplete records of the Army of Northern Virginia survive, it appears from surviving records that flags were issued to an artillery battalion and its batteries at the same time.

In Carter’s Artillery Battalion of 2nd Corps, there are surviving “Special Requisition” for Headquarters Carter’s Battalion, the King William Artillery and the Orange Artillery. All three of these units were issued a “C.S. Flag” on 22 September 1863. The battle flag of the King William Artillery was captured May 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania and is a third issue bunting Army of Northern Virginia pattern battle flag. It is 48” x48” and has the battle honors applied in white paint, to include Coal (sic) Harbor, White Oak Swamp, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Upperville, and Gettysburg.

There is a surviving invoice for the Morris Artillery. They were issued a “Battle Flag” on 10 July 1862. Unfortunately it does not survive. It can be inferred that this would have been the battle flag being produced by the Richmond Depot at that time and that was the second issue bunting 48” x 48” battle flag.

Unfortunately, there are no surviving records for any issue to the Jeff Davis Artillery, also of Carter’s Artillery Battalion, nor do the flags of Headquarters Carter’s Artillery Battalion, the Jeff Davis Artillery or the Orange Artillery survive, but it can be inferred that they all, except the Morris Artillery which may have continued to carry their earlier flag, received similar flags at the same time as a battalion issue.

In Jones’ Battalion of 2nd Corps, there is a surviving “Special Requisition” for the Charlottesville Artillery. They were issued a “Flag” on 24 December 1863. It was captured May 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania and is a third issue bunting Army of Northern Virginia pattern battle flag. It is 46 ¼”x47 ½”. The Battle Flag of the Henrico Artillery was also captured May 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania and is a third issue bunting Army of Northern Virginia pattern battle flag. It is 44”x48”. Given the example of Carter’s Artillery Battalion, it can be inferred that all the batteries of the Jones’ Battalion received battle flags at the same time and would be third issue bunting 48” x 48” battle flags.

In Andrews’ Artillery Battalion of 2nd Corps, there is a surviving “Special Requisition” for the Lee Artillery. They were issued a “Battle Flag” on 1 October 1863. Unfortunately it does not survive, nor are there records for any issue to the Alleghany Artillery. But given the example of Carter’s Artillery Battalion, it can be inferred that all the batteries of Andrews’ Artillery Battalion received battle flags at the same time and would be third issue bunting 48” x 48” battle flags.

In the First Virginia Artillery/Brown’s Battalion of 2nd Corps, there are surviving “Special Requisition” for the Headquarters First Virginia Artillery and the First Rockbridge Artillery. They were issued a “Flag” and “Battle Flag” respectively on 4 October 1863. Unfortunately they do not survive. But given the example of Carter’s Artillery Battalion, it can be inferred that all the batteries of the First Virginia Artillery/Brown’s Battalion received battle flags at the same time and would be third issue bunting 48” x 48” battle flags.

The infantry sized battle flag of the Staunton Artillery is apparently at the NPS Richmond and is 3rd Issue Bunting conforming with the rest of 2nd Corps Artillery ANV surviving examples. I have not seen it in person and have no details of it's history yet.

This is part of my ongoing research and is not yet complete.

Sources are the MOC Flag Collection book and the Compilied Military Service Records of Charles William Fry, Orange Artillery; William P. Carter, King William Artillery; and Thomas H. Carter, King William Artillery, R.C.M. Page, Morris Artillery, James McD Carrington, Charlottesville Artillery, Charles W. Strathham, Lee Artillery, Robert A. Hardaway, First Virginia Artillery and Archibald Graham, First Rockbridge Artillery.

                Drew,

According to a photo in Bob Driver's history of the 1st and 2nd Rockbridge Artillery, VMI owns a "copy" of the 1st Rockbridge flag. I'm not quite sure what that means, but you may want to give Keith Gibson a call at the VMI Museum.
