Looks like your burning some large grain powder there. ;)
Too cool !! I love a good night fire, or in this case early morning fire...

I think we woke you all up... that morning. Were you all going to get up or did the Confederate Mountain Howitzer wake you up? We had a great time that morning.

Re: A confederate view of our cannon at Cedar Creek

We planned on firing a morning gun Sunday, like we did Saturday morning. However when the fighting started we decided that since we were up, we might as well join the fun. After our fourth shot we heard two cannon return fire from your side.
We had orders to do so on fire Saturday morning and then were given orders for Sunday as well. Three cheers for the authentic artillery that was in command.
I have some video on our site www.6thny.com of the dawn artillery firing. We also put up a video of our one misfire which is quite funny.

                Jeff,

I would not want to be on the business end of any artillery piece. :) Thanks for sharing the photo.

                  First of all...
Jeff, thank you for the compliment.. It was a pleasure working with everyone.

                  Second,
I told you I was a big fan of the morning gun and made sure we got the orders cut for both days; to the quizzical chagrin on the General's face when I requested it at the Commanders' meeting...

                  Lastly,
a small story to go with the picture...
I was awoke early that morning by CS?/US? gunfire followed very shortly by footsteps from the center battery's camp. It was Capt. Stewart panting over to the HQ fly, finding me snuggled nicely in my quilt and sleeping cap.
"Sir, we are being fired upon, humbly request permission to return fire?" (paraphrased, of course... it was dark... you think I can remember his exact words? :))
Taking a brief second to ponder the moment... and that he would have the wherewithall to seek out the commander at dark-thirty in the morning to request permission to return incoming fire....
I stated "ABSOLUTELY!" slightly concealing the "if they are firing at you, you better damn well fire back!" connotation.
It was a moment for me... as I was struck by the similarities the 8th Corps must have felt at 5:30 am and finding the Rebs at their muzzles, being able to only fire 15 rounds of canister out of their battery before losing all guns and limbers.

The result was a great moment and a great photo from the 6th New York!

By the way Jeff, great video on the website; he is a great videographer and photographer! My hats off to all of you!
