  • army escort wagon

I am the QM Sargent in the 1st Missouri Light Artillery (USA) and I am rebuilding a replica 1855 six mule army escort wagon (ordnance) and I am looking for a resource that can help identify the wagon manufacturers who made these wagons for the Army. I have gotten some help from the Army Transportation Museum but nothing from the Quartermaster Museum. There is an exact copy of my wagon at Lookout Mountain Battlefield visitors center. The manufacturers mark is in the front panel of both sides.

I hope your project is going well, love to see it when its finished! Here is a link to an image that I seem to stare at at least once a day and is great for reference on escort wagons..

Also you might want to get in touch with some other teamsters on here, Gery Barker, or myself.
There is a forum for teamsters as well, http://reenactingwagoneers.forumotion.net

Hope this helps in your project!

        Chris,

Call the number Michael gave above and ask for Anton Heinlein. He has been with Point Park at Lookout mountain for some time. I'll be staying down the road from the museum over this weekend and I'll try to get the info too.

As far as suppliers during the war, Studebaker, in South Bend, IN was purportedly the largest wagon supplier to the Federal Army. They started in 1852, got a big boost filling army contracts and eventually got their wagon operation up to producing a wagon every six minutes shortly after the war. Hope this helps.

That's a wonderful photo! I am continually impressed by how crisp and clear those period photos could be. So much detail to study!
