  • Friction Primer Packs???

    Hello,

I'm looking for information on reproducing proper Artillery Primer packs. I have one PDF of the Frankford label and have seen a few photos of surviving packs and general dimensions.

What I really need to know is how the packs were milled. Were they solid pine with five holes bored in them, was there a channel cut for the priming wires to lay in, etc?

Does anyone have any good information?

I'd love to make some Confederate packs too if there is any good info on those.

Our unit's focus is the Eastern theater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not going to unrap these but they seem to be placed in the box in a horizontal position just like shown on the label. If I look in the torn end I can see the wire loops. The box is hollowed out and slotted but I can't determine the exact configuration. The paper is removed using a piece of tape just like is used on the fuse packs.

      Thanks Jim,

It's the configuration that confounds me. I would not want to open an original either.

All I can tell you about the wood block by feeling it is that the long sides are solid with no channeling. Each end is channeled out to accept the wires and there seems to be a solid part in the center. Picture a block of wood the correct size with two holes drilled side by side for holding the primer tubes. Some of the area between the holes at each end has been channeled out to accept the wire loops.

This one is open, and an investment in an original with long-term benefit if you wish to reproduce them. http://www.regimentalheadquarters.co...iction-primers

            Re: Friction Primer Packs???

When we did the "Smith/Brewster March" in northeastern Georgia, we issued out live rounds to the company. In preparation, organizer Ken Smith wanted to determine exactly how the cartridges were arranged inside the pack (evidently this wasn't common knowledge back in 1995). At little expense and no damage, he took an original sealed pack to his dentist and had them shoot an x-ray and it very clearly showed the arrangement. Additionally, the St. Louis Arsenal labels were reproduced using true letterpress printing plates, not modern litho, inkjet or copy machine. Best looking repro arsenal packs I've ever seen.

I should have known better than not use the search function. My answer was posted in 2008.

I thought I might update this thread with some of the replicas I have have made. They are fully functional and we use them at events. Click image for larger version

                    Re: Friction Primer Packs???

Would anyone have a printable file?
I've been looking now for quite a while.

Though I seek the friction primer label
the printable file appears a fable.

The kids should but have a fully stocked limber box
but my search is tiresome and now on the rocks.

                    For reproducibles I do lament
until my data minutes are nearly spent.

So now I appeal to you, my pard
to search your flash drive, your discs, your hard (drive).

Wouldst thou share the file of which I speak?
Or mention another whose interest I'd pique?

Everything else is right on track
'cept the elusive, friction primer pack.

Please generously share if you are able,
the US or CS friction primer label.
