At the end of July there is a 90th birthday celebration and change of command ceremony at Fort Dix. On August 4th the 71st Brigade 78 Division, will be occupying Camp Kilmer in Edison NJ. There is talk about having the us to provide a salute battery for them as we did at Fort Dix on May 5.
Here is the after action report from Fort Dix:
Today at Fort Dix we fired a brigadier salute to General Leins.
In attendance were two Major Generals, with several Colonels,Lt. Colonels, Majors and so forth.
Our battery consisted of the following original bronze cannon from Winslow's Battery. One 12lb Napoleon, one 12 lb.heavy howitzer, and one 24 lb howitzer.
From 1st NJ Batt. A, one original 6lb bronze gun. From 1st NJ Batt B. one Parrott rifle and from 6th NY Ind Batt., one Parrott rifle.
We fired several practice volleys, and when the time came, all crews performed flawlessly. Major General Best came by to talk to us and said he was quite impressed with our battery. He also mentioned that his background was in the field artillery. Before leaving he gave this writer one of his Commanders Achievement Award coins.
General Leins gave us a Lightning Brigade coin as well plus a letter of commendation which reads as follows:
On behalf of the 1st Brigade of the 78th Division,
Please accept the letter and brigade coin as a small token
of my appreciation for participating in the ceremony
making my promotion to Brigadier General. The 6th
New York Independent Battery's professionalism and
dedication to it's craft reflects great credit upon it's
members and the organization as a whole. I again
thank you for your efforts and wish you the best in your
future endeavors.
Sincerely
D. CHRISTOPHER LEINS
Brigadier General
Commanding
Many soldiers came over to thank us for lending our support, we replied that is was a great honor for us to be there and show our support to the fighting men and women who continue to put themselves in harms way, protecting our great land.
At this point in time I am talking to the army about using a barracks and meals for the men. The 6th NY Ind Batt. is also prepared to help with travel and powder expenses.
So in closing I am once again offering the Federal artillery and our brothers in grey who wish to galvanize the chance to show your support and honor theses who continually put themselves between us and the forces of evil.
Regards,
Jeffrey Cohen
