12# Howitzer Ammo Box

Hello --
A couple of us out here on the West Coast are looking to build some 12# (mountain) howitzer ammo boxes for static display at Ft. Tejon. Have located some pics of period 12# ammo boxes, but no exact construction specs. The mountain howitzer also appears to have had a "limber" chest that was long and narrow, holding one row of 12# cartridges. Pictures and specs on that chest -- or reference to where the info can be found -- would also be appreciated.
It occurs to us that the specs are likely in an early-war edition of the Ordnance Manual. If someone can point to an on-line copy of same (or even where a re-print can be had), that might help as well.
Any assistance in this direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Try the U.S. Army Field Artillery Museum at Fort Sill, OK. At one time they had reproduction copies of the Mordecai plates available. Even if the copies are no longer around, I imagine that they'd be willing to help.

By the way, it probably wouldn't hurt to mention the Ft. Tejon connection when you contact them.

Dan I think I can help, Troy Groves gave me or rather loaned me some blue prints of I think an Ammo Box and Casson for a Mountain howitzer, to give to my brother. He does some black smith work on the side (you met him at FT Bowie). Any way I still have the prints. I'm sure it's OK with Troy but I'll still ask. PM me tomorrow and I'll see what I can do to get them to you.

P.S. How much pull do you have with FT Tejon? Troy and I were tossing around the idea of getting dimentions of the Pack saddle that holds the cannon I know FT Tejon has a display. We were thinking of putting together an Jack Ass Battery (Already told you I think) and just didn't get around to contact FT Tejon for the dimentions and details.

Haven't looked at my more current copies of the Ordnance Manual, but the 1850 manual is available online through a University of Michigan website called Making of America. Go to http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text...e;seq=00000284 . This opens up on page 260, Packing Field Ammunition. Instructions for packing boxes starts on page 261, with packing instructions specific to rounds for mountain howitzers on page 262.

Dan,
Per the 1861 Ordnance manual...
Packing boxes should be made of well seasoned stuff (generally white pine). 1.25 inch thick, dovetailed, with tenon on the ends. The top of the box is fastened with six 2 inch screws; the box has two handles of 1 3/4-inch rope, attached to the brackets at the ends.
The boxes are painted on the outside different colors, to indicate the contents of the box.
Shot is olive
Shell is black
Spherical case is red
Canister is light drab.

The kind of ammunition is marked on each end, in large white letters. The place and date of fabrication are on the inside cover.

Interior dimensions of the boxes are as follows in inches;
Length x width x depth
Shot, shell, case 27.5 X 9.25 X 8.5
Canister 27.5 X 9.25 X 9.5

The ammunition box would also contain 18 friction primers

The ammunition chest per the manual (page 75)
interior dimensions are as follows in inches;
Length x width x depth
32.8 X 4.75 X 9.35

From what I read about the thickness the rough thickness is 1.31 inches, which I would assume would plain down to 1.25.

Again, this is all from the 1861 ordnance manual.

I was trying to find where I put those plans. They are actually for a Mountain Howitzer on a prairie carriage and limber. I believe Fort Tejon has a pack carriage.

I've seen the plans for the pack carriage ammo chests and for a special cart that was designed to hold two of the chest back to back when not being packed. Pretty cool stuff. I'll see if I can track them down for you.

Sounds like a neat project, Sean and I talked of how cool it would be to actually have the full "pack" set up for that gun. I can tell you it sure is fun to shoot too! Ask Sean how we were "hunting Otters" with it in Monterey a number of years ago. Please keep me posted on the project and if there is anything I can do to lend assistance.

Andy: I'd love to see you get a "Jackass" battery together, that would be first rate! Lets go chase some Piautes! Dan is good friends with Sean Malis at Tejon so he should have some pull with him.

Dan maybe I can help. I am In the 1st Missouri light artillery and we have plans we obtained from an Ordinance Drawings vendor in Ft. Gratiot Michigan for the 12# Mountain Howitzer carriage, limber and ammunition box. They are on 11x17 sheets of paper and are copies of the actual plans for everything. They do not have a website but I will send you their info tomorrow as I left the info in my book at work.

Looking for the same pack saddle plans for our cannon here at Ft. Humboldt. We will have to get a pack carriage to replace our prairie carriage as well.
