Found this on Gun Broker. It is advertised as a 12 pounder ammunition case.

Was Gen Sherman's response upon hearing the capture and execution of 3 reporters who had followed from Atlanta, by the rebels.

Thanks for spotting this.
Attached three of those pics for posterity in this thread after the thing sells. The under lid markings and interior segments are of interest.
