  • 150th Battle of Shiloh - Mounted Cavalry Adjunct!

I am pleased to announce to you the “long awaited” Mounted Cavalry adjunct to the dual 150th Battles of Shiloh that are taking place in West Tennessee at the end of March/beginning of April, 2012!

Let me say to begin with that while there is much controversy over the validity of two efforts for this event on the same dates and within a few miles of one another, this forum will not be used as a “sounding board” for discussing the politics or the mechanisms behind such actions. It is, however to be used to discuss what we are attempting to put together for those horsemen of like mind, who subscribe to doing the best that can be done to correctly portray the mounted cavalryman of both the northern and southern armies.

We have been able to put together three phases of participation which will afford a unique, once-in-a-lifetime set of opportunities with regards to this monumental battle of April, 1862. As is often the case with these large “mega-events” within which we will be working, please make no mistake that the event(s) themselves will be "Mainstream" in their nature, make up and scope. Just as the infantry is doing with their Paddle-Wheel arrival to Pittsburg Landing, we will be working in proximity to the main event and it will rest with the unit commanders and participants to focus on the intended units being portrayed, the scenarios laid out, their impression and the adherence to the authenticity guidelines which are soon to follow, in order to make this a success. We do feel, however, that we are setting the stage for just that!

Here are the three phases planned for the extended weekend and offered for your consideration:

Phase One: The Ride from Corinth (CS): Those who can arrive on Wed. afternoon (March 28th) will be transported to Corinth, MS,.where we will bedroll it Wed. night and then rise early Thursday (March 29th) to recreate Gen. A. S. Johnston's march to Shiloh. Mr. Keith Willingham has worked very hard, over the past two years to put this together and has assured me that it is independent of the two mainstream events. He has also assured me that authentic guidelines will be upheld and no women will be allowed in the ranks of the participants. This will be approximately 22 miles in length and will follow the route that Hardee's Corp. took in their approach. To our knowledge, this has not been done before. If you have not made a ride like this, then you owe it to yourself to make this one. We will complete the approach on Friday morning (March 30th). For this phase, we will target two impressions. That of N. B. Forrest's Tennessee Cavalry and that of John A. Wharton's Texas Cavalry.

Phase Two: Escort the Reinforcements (US): Late Friday afternoon we will fall back to the trailers and change to our Federal tack and impressions. We will then make our way to the river where some time after midnight, the paddle-wheel boat will make it's first arrival with the reinforcement troops of the 15th Iowa Infantry. There will be three landings necessary to complete the transfer and by mid morning of Saturday (March 31st ), they will all be in place. We will then escort them approximately five miles to the main event site and will work and camp with them, conducting duties and actions, through and until Sunday morning. For this phase, we will be portraying the 11th Illinois Cavalry.

Phase Three: Fallen Timbers (CS): Sunday (April 1st ), we will go back and change again to early war Confederate and portray Forrest's and Wharton's cavalry and recreate the legendary rear guard action at “Fallen Timbers” which took place against the men of William T. Sherman.
As an unprecedented treat to this phase, we will be conducting this action on the very ground that Forrest's Cavalry actually engaged Sherman and his men 150 years earlier! I have been told that this land has never been used for any reenacting purposes before.

As you can see, we have an unprecedented array of memorable cavalry action lined up and I hope that you will plan now to attend and be a part of this historic endeavor!

Ken Knopp has agreed to assist in writing the authenticity guidelines for all units portrayed. This should be ready for public consumption by early August. Plenty of time for you to hone your impressions and tack.

Guidelines for registration are being established and will soon be announced here on the Cavalry Forum.

Thanks Mike for the kind words.

I have not ridden the route yet, but plan to this fall. It will be the approximate route that Hardee's men traveled as Johnston moved up. It will follow much of the old Ridge Road and on into Michie (pronounced "Mickey") then along the Bark Rd. Keith tells me very good things about it, but can report more once I have ridden it.

      regards,

          Mark,
So seeing as both of these conflicting Shilohs are mainstream events, how many riders are you looking for/ expect to have ? and might I ask what units are involved if any yet? Do some come with it per the organizers ? or is this just starting now with this announcement and if so....who decides who takes part ? and and will any authenticity standards be enforced? If so how?

Sorry for the question overload . I am interested but personally, very cautious at this point.....

          Thanks,

Re: 150th Battle of Shiloh - Mounted Cavalry Adjunct!

            Pat,

            I will address each question:

1)"So seeing as both of these conflicting Shilohs are mainstream events, how many riders are you looking for/ expect to have ?" It will be a fact through the 150's that these large events will be organized by mainstream groups. Just as with the effort we are putting forth by going to Manassas in three weeks, the event is M.S. But we carve out our piece and focus on it, or we stay at home. Those are the choices. As to the number, I don't know. That will be determined on those who are willing to adhere to the authenticity guidelines that will soon be published.

2)"Do some come with it per the organizers ?" No. This has nothing to do with the cavalry groups that the Blue/Gray Alliance or AOT will put together and we will work independent of them.

3)"or is this just starting now with this announcement and if so....who decides who takes part ?" The planning of this has been going on for several months and again, has nothing to do with the cavalry forces being put together by the host organizers. Those who accept and follow the authenticity guidelines will be allowed to participate. This is a mounted cavalry version of what the WIG is putting with their paddle-boat arrival, etc. As was stated, we will work in conjunction with them for part of the event.

4)"and and will any authenticity standards be enforced? If so how?" As I stated in the announcement, Ken is helping with the Auth. Standards and they will be ready in early August. And YES, they will be enforced.

Here is the long and the short of it. The 150th anniversary events will come around only once. We can either work our cans off to put together an authentic cavalry opportunity within the confines of this, or we can not and stay at home. We are going to try the former.

Will this be perfection with no possible exposure to the mainstream activities??? No, that is impossible due to the proximity.

Will it be as close as we can get to a private immersion event within an mainstream event??? Yes, as much as is humanly possible.

Again, we can either carve out a piece and participate or stay at home.

            Thanks for the questions.
            regards,

Thank You for the honest answers Mark.

Mainstream or staying at home is not the only alternative though for the mounted arm during the 150th's but I understand what you are saying and thank you.

                      Paddy,

You are correct that "Mainstream or stay at home" are not the only answers and that is why we have worked so hard to put this together. However, unless we are talking about a small event that we totally put on for ourselves (ie "Perilous times in South Union", etc.) I don't see how we can participate in the major "150's" unless we form an adjunct (such as this one, or what they have done for 1st Manassas, or what the WIG is doing with the Paddle-wheel, etc.) to the regular event. This isolates to an extent and keeps us shielded from the "funnel cakes" etc.

Is this everyones cup of tea???........obviously not, but it is a bit of a "head-scratcher" as to how to direct the fellas on this forum who are asking for opportunities to participate as well as upholding their integrity and pledge to accuracy.

                      thanks,

                        Mark,
I am really interested in this event. It sounds like a once in a lifetime chance. I originally planned on doing the escort of the infantry guys, but to put the 22 mile march in as well is great. I don't know how many guys I would be able to bring from this area, but I am putting this on my list for next year. If I am going to make any long trip, this would be the one to make. Look forward to seeing you guys in a couple of weeks.

In reference to your last reply. We should also look at the positive that an adjunct can provide. The downside would be that we are exposed to mainstream. The up sdie is that the MAINSTREAM IS EXPOSED TO US! Let us use this as a recruiting oportunity. Put on our best show so that when they see us, they will say"Wow! I want to ride with those guys!"
