Guys, I'm working on an edited edited copy... Especially the shirt section, the original did not read that way... It was about the Federal issued contract shirts, I guess something went haywire in the cut and paste process... There are period correct military spurs being reproduced, just not by a vendor that can be talked about on the A/C... I ordered mine on a Monday and recieved them on a Wed. Shoes or more properly Jefferson Boots were issued to the regular cavalry... i don't have problems with boots as long as they are period correct. I have seen an image from 63' of an Illinois infantry company where as many as 1/2 are wearing boots... more to come. Z

I thought I would bump this back up, with Shiloh coming up I have been reading this many times to help me out! Anyone building up a Federal Cavalry impression should read this!

These aren't the event standards. I have been using this as a "Federal Cavalry for Dummies" handbook though.

Re: The Authentic Federal Cavalry Campaigner

I have often wished that there was a printed Compendium much like the CRC for Cavalry. I know there are those out there who have tons of research and surveys on original equipment and gear that would be of great service to those fresh to the hobby, or at least this Branch.
Many thanks to Zack and all the rest of you for directing us into the light.

                    Jan,

Last I knew John has been working on it, but his life has gotten in the way of his hobbies for the past few years, so I am not sure how much, or if he's made any progress on it in a while.

Re: The Authentic Federal Cavalry Campaigner

Gents, this was originally written right after I attended Perryville in 2002 mounted... the CRC came out in I believe 06'. I would so love for John to do a cavalry edition! It was aimed at a local mainstream unit to help them improve their impressions to a more progressive unit, but like all things reality got in the way including a death, a divorce, etc. and they no longer reenact. They fielded anywhere from 10-12 troopers and were horsemen before reenactors. There was a lot of good potential there... I mentioned it to Mark, who mentioned it to Ken. They looked it over and thought I should post it. It's not just mine, it's ours. Thanks.Z

I too have talked of how someone should do such a referance book. I am not talented in these relams, but could we as cav people compile articals and photos in our paticular field of knowlege, and someone or team compile they to creat a cav COI type book? It would be a big ,big job, but doable with the right organization. just thinking out loud with my fingers. plm

Re: The Authentic Federal Cavalry Campaigner

I don't want to speak out of turn (because I don't know where John is with the project at this point) but if/when he ever finishes it, it will blow folks away. John, who wrote most of the Columbia Rifles Compendium is pretty close to a genius and he has an amazing understanding of all things CW. He got into cavalry riding with us in the 1st Maine, and got intrigued when there were all sorts of questions that he had that we couldn't answer. That lead him to turn on his analytical mind, and he uncovered sources that I'd never heard of, or thought of. Really amazing stuff! Let's just hope that he gets it published at some point.
