  • How to tighten up saber in scabbard

I have a repro 1840 cavalry saber bought from Fall Creek. How do you tighten the saber up in the scabbard. It's very loose.

Some actually during the Civil War period intentionally put a perpendicular dent on one side of the scabbard to deal with any looseness.

I have used the dent method with success. If you haven't already, the rings on scabbard need to be brazed or welded at the joint (to keep them from opening up).

There are metal tangs just down from the throat of the scabbard that can be bent out to tighten things up. That being said it didnt stay tight very long on the Ames or Windlass repops Ive had.

A guy I worked with has his great grandfathers 1865 that was carried by him at Wounded Knee in 1890 it has the "trademark" dent too... Interestingly enough he was the bugler for the 7th and Chris had his saber and bugle. Z

Wow, that gentleman was one lucky person. I have nothing from my great great grandfather's time in Uncle Sam's army. I mean nothing. I am in no way a saber expert. But that is why you learn.
