CS saddle bags vs valises

I have read in past postings the theme of discouraging the use of saddle bags. I may be misunderstanding what I remember reading, so I thought I'd ask here on COI. I am wanting to get a valise , but I have nice civilian bags too, where and when does one use each?I think I have a general idea of this , but would welcome more input from those more knowlegable than I.

Paul, the valise is very under -represented in my opinion. I intend on going with a valise for the upcoming Shiloh campaign in my CS impression. In Ken's book , on the cover and on page 109 are some valises that would be cool to copy.
Going with no valise or saddle bags is also cool, I intend to do so more in the future.
BTW, great job on the bits !

I have made two different style valises, copied from pictures of on line auctions. I would appreciate if anyone out there could critique them for me.
