Page that the link brings you to. Hope to have it back up

      Re: Civilian Saddle Blanket

Chris provided me a couple of pictures and couple of choices. The quest maybe at an end. The hard part is making a decision of what to chose.

        Bill,

Isn't life filled with so many challenges?

And you will always wonder what Ken's Aunt Louise would have been able to offer?

Seriously, glad you are making progress and make sure to report back to the masses what you came up with as it could help others down the road.

Chris, thank you for stepping in to help!

Oh, and I also wish that the Spanish moss blankets were still in production. They have become such a collector's item that I feel like I am wearing out a museum piece each time I use mine. Oh the burden.............

        regards,

          Ken --

Regarding the saddle blanket from Confederate Memorial Hall. I vaguely recall that during a visit there a decade or so ago, that that blanket was described to me as having Mexican War provenance. But that was from a volunteer who was working there at the time, so it could have been something that was indicated to him without any historical accuracy.

            Bill --

Keep in mind that few, if any, of the limited CS inspection returns list "saddle blankets." The term we see is just "blankets." This has always led me to believe that the average trooper may have had only one blanket (at best) that was used both as a saddle and sleeping blanket.

Also about the Spanish moss blankets, I typed them in on Google and there was women named Dawn Klug down in Florida who made them. It was a newspaper article from 2009, but she might still be making them. Sorry, I did not see any contact info.

She was the one making pads/blankets for Glen Pier Depot. But do not know if the source has dried up.

                  Re: Civilian Saddle Blanket

Yes, Dawn is/was the maker of the blankets that we do see occasionally and her son Jason (a fine fellow) frequents the A/C from time to time. Dawn's health has declined to the point that she can no longer make them.

The intense laborious process is such that no one else has picked this up in her absence.

Mike, you are correct that the blankets were usually dual use and not just "a saddle blanket" per se. This is why I am glad to see Bill and others checking with period blanket makers (such as Chris) for proper blankets that would have been seen with some frequency, to be used in the saddling process.

                  regards,

                      Re: Civilian Saddle Blanket

It's interesting that there is a south-west appearing saddleblanket in the 7th Tenn and a spade type bit id'ed to the 6th Ky... Who knows what was brought up from the Tex-Mex area by "dad" during the Mex war. Too, I think those boys back then got around much more than what we would like to believe; there are several accounts of farmers up here going down to New Orleans and back. John A Logan's dad made part of his money selling those fellas horse to ride back home only to buy them back and send them back down for the next bunch of guys headed south.

Anyway there are folks out there who custom weave saddleblankets still yet. I contacted one a couple years ago about a custom blanket. Base price:$400.00 YIKES!

                        Re: Civilian Saddle Blanket

I talked to Jason Klug recently about his mother and the moss blankets. He said that it seems that whenever she started to work with the moss, she became ill. Something in the moss or the process is possibly making her sick. She has since stopped and her health has improved.

That is excellent news, Jeff. Dawn is a wonderful lady and I am glad to hear that she is feeling better.

Who knows what type of allergens or mites lurk in the fibers of that moss. I can see that it might cause problems.

Thanks for everyone's help with this. I ended up purchasing a Shaker blanket from Chris. I contacted Chris and he provided two possible blankets to use.

Hey Troops; My wife is a fiber fiend...I mean artist, and I just mentioned that if she knew how to make these moss blankets ,she might do well. She said that she would like to give it a try if some one would send her some moss to work with. It's hard to find up here in the great white north. So... can or would anyone down south like to send some up and we will see if my good wife Cyndi can fill the void in supply of moss blankets. I hope Dawn won't mind. plm

Well Paul, I have a relative who lives in Tampa, Florida. I could ask him to wonder around with a black garbage bag grabbing Spanish moss off the trees. Then he might be able to ship it to me and I could bring it down for Cyndi to weave into blankets/pads. Just a thought.
