Hardward question for Ken

Ken,

I know you're the hardware guru. Someone posted a question in the regular Authenticity Discussion (non-cav) about a button type finial he found on an original holster. I've seen that type of finial before as well, but know absolutely nothing about it. I just call it a button finial, but I'm sure I'm mis-naming it. Do you know anything about it? Better yet, does anyone know if they are being reproduced? I know the brass and even the pewter holster and cartridge box finials are being reproduced, but I haven't seen this style yet.

Go to Nick Duvall's website and look up his Confederate Cartridge Box #3. The finial is brass in the photo but is of the shape of the buggy tarp button. I have seen these reproduced in brass and lead. I have an original Confederate cartridge box in my collection, one I bought out of Robert Serio's collection, and it has a finial of this shape but is made of Japanned tin. I have seen photos of other originals with this Japanned buggy button. It seems logical that this shape of finial could be used with success on holsters and your photo of the original confirms it's use in at least one instance.

Thanks, Matt. I've looked at photos of quite a few original holsters over the years and I've seen this type of finial pop up from time to time. It's uncommon, but there nonetheless.

Oh, and I meant HardWARE question for Ken, not Hardward. We need spell check.
