Impression Guidelines for the 24th Massachusetts Infantry
Headgear:
* Forage cap, “Type 1” or “Type 2,” or a commercial cap is required.
* Citizen’s hats, ideally black low crown varieties, are strongly encouraged for off duty wear. Straw and palmetto hats will be accepted in LIMITED NUMBERS. Please contact and event organizer first.
* Hat brass- Based on several examples we have of Federal soldiers in Florida, hat brass will be acceptable in a limited capacity.
Overcoat:
* A sky blue kersey overcoat isn’t required but are highly recommended. A few mounted overcoats are acceptable.
Blouse, frock :
* U.S fatigue blouse, lined. High quality with no teal colored blouses.
* U.S enlisted frock. High quality only. These are encouraged in addition to your fatigue blouse. There is ample evidence support the use of both while stationed in St. Augustine.
NCO chevrons:
* All NCOs are required to wear appropriate chevrons.
Pants:
* Footman pants made of sky blue kersey, Schuylkill Arsenal or contract made.
NCO pants stripes:
* NCOs are required to wear appropriate pants stripes. All corporals should have a ½” stripe on their pants and all sergeants should have a 1 ½” stripe on their pants.
Shirts:
* U.S. Army domet flannel or wool flannel shirts are encouraged. You should have a government issue shirt.
* Wool or printed cotton citizen’s shirts are acceptable.
Drawers:
* U.S. Army canton flannel drawers.
* Citizens drawers in wool or cotton.
* None.
Footwear:
* U.S. Army bootees.
* Citizens shoes or boots.
Knapsack:
* Double bag knapsack. If you have a high quality reproduction, you should bring it. If you do not have a high quality reproduction don’t bother.
Blanket:
* Grey or brown U.S. issue blankets are required.
* Civilian non-regulation blankets are acceptable for sleeping quarters.
Ground cloth:
* Rubberized or painted ground cloth.
Mattress Tick:
* If you have an accurately made ticking you may bring it.
Haversack:
* Painted haversack copied from any surviving original.
Canteen:
* U.S. Army canteens of Philadelphia or New York origin.
Shelter Half
*Type 2 shelter half required
EQUIPMENT: All equipment shall be high-quality reproductions in terms of construction and materials used.
Waist belt:
* Private’s belt with brass keeper made of bridle leather.
* Private’s belt with sewn keeper made of either waxed or bridle leather.
* Private’s belt with keeper cut off.
Cartridge box:
* 1861 pattern cartridge box with plate. 1864 pattern boxes are not acceptable.
Cartridge box belt:
* All cartridge boxes must be worn on a cartridge box belt with appropriate breastplate.
Cap box:
* Arsenal or contract made cap box.
Scabbard:
* 2-rivet scabbards and 7-rivet scabbards are equally acceptable.
ARMS: All arms and bayonets shall be in EXCELLENT working order, clean, functioning, and safe. You will be inspected by the state.
Rifle Musket:
* The regiment was completely outfitted with Springfield rifle muskets. Model 1855, 1861, or 1863 .58 Springfield Rifle Musket, appropriately defarbed, with bayonet, is strongly preferred.
* Enfield Rifle Musket, defarbed, with bayonet, is acceptable in limited numbers.
Gun sling:
* Gun sling made of oiled leather
Furniture and personal items
* Are acceptable under the conditions that they are either original or accurate reproduction’s of period items. Carpets, bags, bottles exc. No grandmas old liquor bottles or crappy Indian carpets.
* There will be a sutler to provide you with basic subsidies.
