  • Ft.Moultrie LH & Hunley Funeral-April 14-18, 2004

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Palmetto Living History Association is hosting a unique event and opportunity prior to the Hunley crew's funeral on Saturday, April 17. In conjunction with the NPS, we will be hosting a Ft. Moultrie Living History in the days prior to the burial-Wednesday April14 through Saturday the 17th. As many of you know, Ft. Moultrie is the spot where the Hunely was originally launched for its fateful mission. Thousand of spectators and interested individuals will be visiting the fort prior to the funeral on Saturday. It is our intention to provide them with quality living history along with preparing ourselves for the solemn task of burying these souls in an honorable fashion.

I cannot comment on other mainstrean elements that may participate in the procession in some fashion but I can state that our adopted unit designation, "The Dixon Guards", will have two missions. The first is to provide top quality LH and interpretation for the NPS. The second is to provide the company(s) that will be firing the ceremonial volleys for the funeral. While much of the international media may be focused on the group doing this, we must remember that this funeral is about them (the crew) and not us. These men made American history by their efforts and will be buried as Americans. Our components will contain nor tolerate any neo-confederate nonsense but rather the utmost military courtesy and attention to military detail. Many people don't realize that the NPS has a huge planning role in this funeral and they are very aware of the issues surrounding this event.

I invite interest parties to view the Ft. Moultrie LH website and see what the goals and objectives are for this undertaking. Registration is limited to 75 participants that will re-activate Ft Moultrie into a functioning garrison environment circa 1864 and participate in the funeral proceedings. Uniform and event guidelines will be very strict and have no tolerance for deviation. Ration issuances and civilian scenarios will be part of the days' events leading up to the funeral. Those attending the LH and funeral will have a lot of expected of them as far as drill goes. We must be flawless in our military bearing for all the right reasons. Thank you for your time and consideration.
