  • Last Minute Details

Well it looks like we will have a nice weekend for the event at least according to the weather channel. Looks like it will be partly cloudy with lows Saturday in the mid 40s and Highs in the low 70s. Sunday will be a bit cooler with lows in the upper 30s and highs only in the 60s. For some of you coming from the Northern regions I am sure this sounds like summer.

For those that will be prisoners, the casemates are damp and can get quite cool. I recommend you have a good nonfederal issue blanket. Having been a prisoner at the last two I 600 events, I can say a good blank is worth 10 times it's weight in gold. A sleeping cap and an extra pair of socks is not a bad idea either. You will be sleeping two to three per bunk so you will be able to share blankets with your bunk mates. Lastly make sure you get a good meal on Friday before you get to the event. Once we go live it will be pickled onions and corn meal unless the Colonel is nice and allows some visits to the sutler.

For the Guards, remember we are on garrison duty and Mr. Craddock is our Captain. As we all know he is a hard man. So make sure your uniform is in good repair and your brass is polished. Review Guard Mount proceedures. Most of all remember to never hand your weapon over to anyone while you are standing a post.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone there. Have a safe journey.

    Re: Last Minute Details

I have it from a reliable source... Capt. Craddocks' Lt. is an old regular, with many, many years in service (Rumor has it, that he was one of Ol' Winfield Scotts' Instructors at West Point, when Winney was a plebe). This may be a mixed blessing..... those 'many years' may have addled his brain a bit, and aged his body to the point that he won't be as hard a man as one might expect from a fella with so many years in uniform.

Brian - not an enlisted man or NCO?!?

From this and contact I've had with one of the event NCO's, it looks like us prisoners are in to have a tough lot guarding them.

See Mr. Cleveland's response below, as my previous information here was incorrect.

                from the posted Guidelines

"Participants will stay in period attire all weekend (Saturday morning 6am until Sunday afternoon 4pm). NO one will be allowed to leave the Fort grounds after closing hours Saturday night without the permission of the Colonel and the resident Park Ranger." At this event it has always been understood, No one leaves early.

That being said the last tour we are committed to providing is at 2 oclock sunday, at the end of which we will march out to the steamer, all together prisoners under guard, this will be about 3.

                    Re: Last Minute Details

I hope it clears up because I live out on the islands and it is nasty out here right now. I hope everyone has a safe drive down here to Savannah. If you are looking for some good places to eat try not to get stuck in the tourist traps downtown but come out to the first two islands before you get to the fort or even out to Tybee and there are plenty of places to eat.

                      Re: Last Minute Details

Shame I'm not going, but after the event, the best microbrewery in Savannah is the Moon River Cafe, across from the Hyatt. Outstanding crab cakes, plus the upper floors are haunted.
