Re: After the Battle - 14-16 November 2008

    Luke, thanks for the information.

I word of caution, however, for those who might want to cut brush for the shebang described.

    WE CAN'T DO IT!!!!

We are on actual ground and no disturbances of foliage or ground will be permitted.

Very good point dusty! However, the fly thing can be done....at least it makes one feel better about having a shelter half (which to me is what his description sound like).

On an unrelated, but facinating note... Got to see the west side of the ATB/Slaughter Pen property on Friday as I returned to Richmond via Amtrak. Noted several doe and a fawn coming out of the six foot corn rows. No groundhogs were sighted (although the population is noteworthy, in itself).

If we signed up for this last year, do we need to register again?

I've completely forgotten what was going on at the time.

Good point Dusty...but perhaps some exceptional individuals could come prepared EARLY with what is needed to construct such a thing...packing in the brush...and packing out (oh how I wish I was still home in VA).

                              Paul,

Not sure what foliage would have been on the battlefield in mid December to build a shebang???????

From all accounts, it was winter.

                                Evergreens; Scrub Pines, Cedar Trees...etc.??

From a practical application these limbs if layed properly do a phenominal job of keeping the dew off, and of providing excellent shade...the frame work does well providing a base layer on which to spread the larger more water resistant barrier of deciduous trees; oaks, maples, gums, beech, birch...etc., to truly make a waterproof structure.

Just a few thoughts...and to reiterate: I am not encouraging deforestation onsite, or acts of excavation...the land is protected, and it is our priveladge to bivoauc on this site, as such we must follow the site rules; which prohibit the cutting/clearing of brush/trees, and digging of any kind.

No I'm not trying to be difficult...were I home in Virginia I'd have a slew of scrub pines to choose from for the construction of simple shebangs.
