The time is September 23th and 25th 1862. Buell's Army of the Ohio is marching from the south in a race to reach Louisville, Kentucky, which Bragg has threatened. The Army has marched past Elizabethtown, slowly pushed through the now extinct town of Bloomington (located at present day Fort Knox) and is closely nearing the river landing and supply base at West Point. Here elements of the Army are marching across the Salt River on the home stretch to Louisville.
West Point is a small river town and is bustling with Army activity at this time. Vast amounts of supplies have been unloaded here to help feed Buell's hungry and ill supplied troops. Above West point, upon Muldraugh Hill, sets Fort Duffield. Constructed in November 1861, Fort Duffield overlooks the town, Salt/Ohio Rivers, and the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike. The fort has never been attacked and has been lightly manned throughout the whole year. With the Confederate threat to Kentucky, volunteer infantry has been placed on alert in the earthen fort. Undoubtedly those at the fort watched as Buell's veteran and travel worn troops marched by on the L & N Turnpike.
This event will create events that could have occurred between two Federal Infantry companies during this time and place. The first company represents a company of a regiment marching along with Buell's Army of the Ohio on their way to Louisville. They will make a brief detour to Fort Duffield. The second company represents one that is stationed at Fort Duffield. The physical appearance of the two companies will be apparent. The veteran company is to be worn and dirty from their rigorous march from Tennessee. The Fort's compliment is in much better condition. Companies formed for this event will not be designated and named after actual regiments. It is the desire of the organizers to develop a scenario BASED within the context of Buell's march to Louisville. By doing so, the organizers and participants are committing to replicating events and movements of several different Indiana and Kentucky Regiments during this time frame.
In order for the members of the companies to develop a more specific back ground the organizers have developed a basis for participants to base a researched persona. The veteran company will be based out of Indiana, more specifically the Indianapolis and Lafayette area, and organized in 1861. This company has been serving with the 4th Division, currently under the command of Gen. Smith since the beginning of the year 1862. During the event this company will be under the command of Capt. Matt Woodburn. Registration is limited to the first 40 soldiers whom apply.
The company based on the hill will be from Kentucky, based out of the Louisville and that area of the state, and was organized in early 1862. This company has been on close duty to the cities of Louisville, Elizabethtown and Bardstown since that time guarding the road and railroads in that area from guerrillas. While they are commonly referred to as “Green,” it should be noted that they are not entirely "green.” They are just not combat nor campaign tested. During the event this company will be under the command of Capt. Paul Callaway. As with the other company registration is limited to the first 40 soldier whom apply.
A slightly more detailed outline of each company will be avalible shortly.
