    Re: Telegraph Speak!

    Johnny,

That's "International" or "Continental" Morse Code. As I understand it, America in the 1800's still used Morse's original code, which is different.

    This site seems helpful:

    A comparison of the codes:

        Re: Telegraph Speak!

The idea of a telegraph line sounds great! I am thinking of doing the same thing for our unit out here in the wilds of California. It is different listening to code from a sounder than it is over the airwaves for sure.

          Re: Telegraph Speak!

I just received the key today and am expecting the sounder tomorrow. The key is sweet! The sounder is a functional original and I picked up a repro book on telegraph circa 1866 which should be primarily the same as what we use in 1863. All forms will be brought along to. I should have it running by this weekend.

            Re: Telegraph Speak!

A working telegraph! That is way too cool. I volunteer to be the guy who watches the young bucks climb the tree, you know the guy who helps with the wire bundle, hands up wire and says," It's not the fall that hurts, its the landing."

Counting down the days till what will surely be an awesome event.

                Re: Telegraph Speak!

Having a working Telegraph at an event would be great to see, especially for us real world US Government Intelligence Analyst, gives us something to tap into. Could turn into some sort of SNL spoof of that Iraq War skit, "Press Conference", gives us the ability to "locate and to count you"

                  Re: Telegraph Speak!

Sounder is received, hooked up and the unit runs perfectly. I also just read that the garrison at Fort Benton received the information of Marmaduke approaching via telegraph. Pretty cool huh!
If you still want to or can come we have room, so just please consider.:sarcastic
