Calling all Mossbacks!
I am posting this here in order to keep all discussions for Marmy’s Raid together in one folder. This is a great opportunity for men who have been considering a civilian impression that crosses the boundaries between military and non-combatant. As many of you know, Gen. John Schofield issued a conscription order in 1862 that ordered all civilian men to enlist in the Enrolled Missouri Militia. Those men who refused to do so faced arrest or conscription by either side. Many of them fled to the woods to hide out; hence the nickname “Mossbacks.” At Marmaduke’s raid, civilian men will have to be doubly careful. Their duty will be to guard the women and the food, but they’ll also have to avoid arrest or capture by both armies and by bushwhackers.
Those men who are interested in taking up this challenging impression will be registered (for the purposes of the event) as civilians. They should put together a respectable civilian impression, without military accoutrements or uniforms. Weapons can include fowling pieces, shotguns, or squirrel rifles (no Enfields.) Their job will be to guard our food supply, which will be brought on site by wagon, and to help protect the families.
Those women who are interested in participating should contact me. Please be aware that there will be no amenities of any kind -- because we are portraying a refugee population, we will not have tents, portapotties, or any other conveniences. We’ll be sleeping under shebangs and digging our own sinks. Moreover, this is a relatively rough, steep terrain in the eastern Ozarks, so all participants interested in joining up should be in good physical condition. Please be aware that this will be an immersion event; first-person is expected from the time we arrive on site on Thursday evening until the time the event concludes on Sunday. Because this is an invitation-only event held on private property, all participants are asked to register with the appropriate individual. I’ll let Frank and Terry post those details; however, civilian men and women should register with me.
