What: Living History on Jekyll Island
Where: Camp at the Maj. Horton / Dubignon tabby house on the NW end of the island
When: May 2-4th
The Armory Guards are attempting to recreate early 1862 when Jekyll and St. Simon's Island were occupied by Confederate forces. We will be portraying member of Georgia's 7th Battalion.
Based on research, there should be commutation garments and a heavy dose of civilian attire within the ranks. Accoutrements should consist of pre-war or early war issue items. English accoutrements are certainly acceptable.
After landing on the abandoned island, Federal accounts of the Confederate camps indicate that the Rebs were living pretty "high on the hog". Such items as tents, flies, chests and camp furniture are noted by the Federals. You're certainly welcome to make use of it as well - just don't bring "fantasy" items that didn't exist at the time. You can expect that we will also make some brush arbors for shelter.
Our research show that the Georgia troops were issued 1853 enfields after they arrived on the island. We intend to hold and "issuance" on Sunday and another weapon for use on Saturday so we ask everyone to bring their enfield in addition to a pre-war musket or civilian gun such as the M-1816, M-1840, M-1842, shotguns, etc. Please bring minimally 40 cartridges for demonstration purposes, especially skirmishing. Working bayonets (in other words they actually fit and will lock) would be appreciated, especially for the Enfield issuance.”
