  • Preservation March

    Folks,
For your consideration, Rob Hodge is putting together another preservation march with the stated goal of raising funds for battlefield preservation. The event is to run from 10/31/08 through 11/2/08.
Details can be found on the web site @ http://www.cwreenactors.com/preservation2008/index.html
Folks considering riding as Federal Cavalry please feel free to drop me a line. This is a rare opportunity to have a terrific cavalry experience, cover some mileage, and ride on some of the last pristine cavalry ground in the east.

    Thanks,
    Dave Myrick

    Dave,

There actually is already a small thread on this event elsewhere on the forum, but there is no such thing as bad publicity!

For the cavalry it is a great event in an excellent location, and I highly encourage anyone who can, to attend.

    Take care,

      Re: Preservation March

To bump this thread and piggyback Greg Starbuck's thread in the Preservation Folder, this is not one to miss, fellows. Hodge has been talking about this event for some time and there has already been a fair amount of interest generated. I encourage anyone that wants to know more to consult the website for the event, which does have quite a bit of information on it.

Primarily, Federal Infantry is needed. The Confederate involvement will be that of Mounted Services (artillery and cavalry) with very limited infantry. For anyone that is interested in attending as a Federal Infantry participant, I am happy to field questions beyond what the event website entails.

Please be sure to also read up on the methods of raising money. The minimum donation for participation is $100. This event is intended to drive thousands of dollars that will go DIRECTLY to battlefield preservation. And, no one is asking you to give $100 out of your own pocket. Talk to your friends, family, co-workers, etc about what we are doing and ask for sponsorship. This is a great way to not only raise money but make people aware that there are people that are making a difference to save historic grounds. And let them know that they don't have to be in the hobby to contribute.

Also, you must pre-register in order to attend the event. The fee will be $20

All this information and more can be found at:
      http://www.cwreenactors.com/preservation2008/index.html

      I can be e-mailed at: JimConley1862@hotmail.com

Hope to see many of you in Loudon County in November!

Glad to see so much info so early on the latest of Rob's most worthy efforts. Over the years this is probably the most consistent, authentic and successful series of preservation marches in the hobby. The entrance fee is the right number and shows how serious an endeavor it really is for the best of causes.

Lots of good hints on how to raise money. Well done Jim.

Thank you, Doug, but I must confess that I cannot take credit for any of this. I am merely here to fill in the gaps as I am needed. Rob Hodge deserves all the credit for making such an awesome event possible for us to enjoy and be a part of.

              Re: Preservation March

I wanted to bump this thread again because we are just under two months away from the event. I know that a lot has been put on the calendar this fall, but this is surely not one to miss.

Remember, there is a registration fee aside from your donations to cover supplies needed to operate the event. Registration information can be found on the event website. Please get those in as soon as possible.

If you have not already, now is also the time to write letters, talk with friends and family, and network about the preservation efforts this event is focusing on. You are asked to make a minimum donation of $100 towards preservation as a participant, which is a very simple amount to collect. Also, you can tell people that they can pick up preservation t-shirts to contribute as well. All the money generated from the shirts, yes ALL, goes towards the sites of focus as well. Please see Don Harrelson's post in the Preservation Folder: http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...875#post112875

The event website can be found at: http://www.cwreenactors.com/preservation2008/

Those of you that may pick up or are expecting a copy of the September/October Civil War Historian can flip to page 20 to see a write-up about the event by Rob Hodge.

Again, I am happy to field any questions folks might have or point you in the right direction.

              So, who's going?!

                Re: Preservation March

                Mr. Conley,

I've sent a couple e-mails and haven't heard back. I have a question about the guidelines, I have a non-defarbed enfield, but also have a defarbed M1861 Colt, would this be acceptable? I just can't drop the cash to defarb my enfield now.

                  Brandon,

Your non-defarbed Enfield should be acceptable. The bigger issue will be with wearing decent uniform and equipment items.

                    Paul,

Thanks, I spoke with Jim about the enfield, I'll try and get the basics done on the enfield. I'm good for all the uniform requirements. I spend the defarb money on my Colt.

                      Re: Preservation March

                      Gents,

I know I am really looking forward to this event! We have a healthy contingent of Federal Cavalry signed up to go, but there is always room for more. For the cavalry this event is the highlight of the year.

I have seen or gotten at least a few questions buy guys who are kinda nervous about being able to pass the standards for the event (like the musket question from earlier in this thread). I don't have anything to do with running this event, but I don't think I am wrong in saying that raising money for preservation is a lot more important here than having every detail of your impression exact. A good impression is a must, but I don't think anyone is going to be turned away if their musket is not defarbed.

                      Take care,

With only 2 days I don't know were to go. The good thing is I only live 10-15 minutes from were I think it will be.
