Use the search key up top, and you'll find your answer.

David it is a piece of cake. Get yourself a good gun case (Cabela's metal blackpowder case is the one I have) - make sure it is long enough...or...plan to mail the gun and rounds to yourself at a UPS drop point close to the event site.

If you buy a case, you still cannot take rounds on the plane so arrange with someone to supply you with rounds there. For Banks Grand Retreat, both Ox Johnson and Dusty Lind are making rounds for folks - see the event forum here: http://www.voy.com/201657/ I imagine someone who makes rounds for a living like Mike Watson at Cartridges Unlimited would mail the rounds to a drop point as well. There are any number of comrades who would be your contact/sponsor on the other end.

The other key to flying is weight - have a large suitcase or duffle (the lighter and stronger the better) for most of your stuff that can be no more than 50lbs full. The gun case holds your rifle, bayonet, belt, cartridge box sling, skillet and anything metal you can fit to save weight in the other bag. Any overflow like civilian clothes and shoes can go in your carry-on bag. Make sure nothing is in the carry-on bag that might be construed to be a weapon (like the antique scissors in your housewife).

Have a back-up lock for the gun case.

Coordinate with someone for airport pickup and drop off, or if flying is too hard, get on the carpool list.

I have flown to 12 events in the last 3 years and the only problem I had was an overzealous screener who was absolutely convinced my tin drum canteen was an ingenious explosive device

Weren't there representatives from Conner Prairie attending Shaker Village this year? I understood they were doing research for a more authentic event.

Since I started this here ruckus, I supposed I should follow up. I didn't intend to stir up trouble and I still don't.:o I'm new around here and I didn't see a folder for "Mixed Events" or "Mainstream and Authentic events". My curiosity was simply to find out if there were 6-8 events in 2007 that hardcore living historians thought to be THE events for the year. That's why I assumed it belonged in this folder. My apologies if I violated forum rules. Thanks for your feedback anyway.

Are there plans for LBL in 2007?

Probably fair to say that Banks' Grand Retreat (BGR) in March has taken the place of an LBL event, at least in the Spring. John Duffer will be commanding the feds at BGR.

regarding flying with long arms, I have flown several times befor I got into cav. Seems back then I had trouble finding a gun case long enough to hold a 3-bander. As I rcall if you pull the barrell you gain about 3 inches. That worked for me and is very easy. And the detatched barrell makes for real easy cleaning when you get home. Drop the breech into a pail of warm water. Plunge patches until the bore is clean. Let it drip dry upside down. Later run some of your favorite lube, anti rust, etc and reassemble.

Cabela's sells a metal one that is long enough. In fact I have carried a 42 and 61 together in it. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...819&hasJS=true

Not cheap, but it is the best and will survive the savage baggage handlers that destroyed my plastic case in short order.
