Banks Grand Retreat will have fighting and manuvering.
Now, pony up a link about the Olustee Campaigner Adjunct. Sister is retiring and moving down there come Christmas. While normally we would not lift a finger to go to Olustee, free room and board, a campsite already staged, and her husband picking us up at the airport does have its attractions......and we've like to at least wave at somebody.
We will post something as soon as we get our collective act together. We just decided it to do the Olustee thing while at Perryville.
Hey, I'm serious! :) I really do have optimism for the "turn things around," "carpe eventum" potential of small events. And I would like an excuse to go out to Conner Prairie again. Saw their 1880s section for the first time a couple years ago, and it was cool.
I have it on good authority (one of the event organizers, on the board of CP, former Navy officer) that strides in the direction of accuracy will be a priority. Also, the older village is a great, accurate setting for an event. Two years ago they also dug trenches for us for the battle - that was a new experience. Mainly the potential is for us Navy folks - its central location might bring in navy reenactors from Cincinnati, NW and NE Indiana, and possibly a contingent from "out east." We could have more Navy reenactors at CP this year than ever before in the Midwest.

"The publick give credit for feat of arms, but the courage which is required for them, cannot compare with that which is needed to bear patiently, not only the thousand annoyances but the total absence of everything that makes life pleasant and even worth living." - Lt. Percival Drayton, on naval blockade duty.
"We have drawn the Spencer Repeating Rifle. It is a 7 shooter, & a beautiful little gun. They are charged to us at $30.00. 15 of which we have to pay."
William Clark Allen, Company K, 72nd Indiana Volunteers, May 17, 1863

That's good to hear. Keep us updated.
Isn't the older village still very specific to 1836? At a minimum, they'd have to take out all the trained 1836 interpreters, and staff it with 1860s civilian volunteers for the weekend, and I just can't see that happening.
What about Gilmor's Raid 2007? You'll need fresh shoes on your horses for that one, boys!
Are we joking (in the context of top events of 2007)?
[Quote:] "Join us, in the scenic Little Gunpowder Falls valley for our Civil War Weekend. Each day there will be a small-scale reenactment of Gilmor's raid as well as a more general demonstration of Civil War combat. Between battles visitors are urged to stroll through the camps, chat with the knowledgeable reenactors, and have a closer look at their uniforms and equipment. Throughout the day Saturday there will be a musical sets by the Camptown Shakers, doing their special style of early 19th century music. Period and non-period refreshments will be on sale for a nominal charge at the refreshment stand. A delicious dinner will be provided to all registered reenactors Saturday evening."
Auh, "non-period refreshments" at least there will be funnel cakes!

Yes, it is still 1836 specific, going there tomorrow on my sons 4th grade field trip. As an 8th generation Hoosier, I would like to see a specific scenario that really happened in this region. If a military scenario were to be done, should it not be some type of a muster, or perhaps locals looking for 'Copperheads' in the area. Maybe veteran soldiers home on recruiting duty.
Not being disrespectful here, my messmates and I have disscused this before. Besides Morgans raid in the southern part of the state, there was not much fighting here. I guess it seems right doing military actions or movements, when we are on or near an actual battlefield, but at a place like C.P., it would seem the perfect place to educate the public about history that happened in cities and villiages throughout Indiana in the 1860's. Fighting or campaign marches just don't seem to fit here. If it ever came about, would it not have to be something new (scenario wise), special or specific to this area to attract our comrades from this side of the hobby.
As far as the interpreters leaving or making some adjustments for such an event, well, my glass is half empty. But I am ever hopeful that some day.......

Agreed. Surely there were some homefront situations in the newspapers that could be adapted into a good event. I think the key to making it (or anything) a "top event" is to offer something--anything--more accurate than the generic, same old, y'all come, talk to the public about whatever you do, then gather 'round for a big supper, discuss gear around the campfire, then do it again the next day. Look at the success Ft. Pulaski has had getting Confederates to a "top event" by offering, well, um, nothing really but a big cold room and some cornbread and pickled onions. Or Winter of '64. The concept is simple, but it's all in the execution.

What about the Lilly Cabin? Is it still mostly empty of all but basic furnishings, and set up for public rental, with a big field down below? They've probably put it to some other use since I was there, but that would have been someplace easier to talk them into turning over to reenactors.
Not to mention a veterans' reunion off of the 1880s area...
Here is my list;
Immortal 600
Spotsylvania LH
Vicksburg LH
The WIG is working on 2 events for the fall of next year. One is a living history at Chickamauga where we will have 4 companies, one of which is the Stonewall Brigade portraying an ANV company and the WIG to field 3 AOT companies.
The other we are putting together is a tactical in Oct/Nov. It will be similar to the TAG/Outpost events we have done in the past. Most likely it will be in Middle Tenn in order to have enough land to work with for Cavalry and Infantry and not be in static lines all weekend.
I will have information on these events in a couple of weeks and will get them posted and will bring them up for discussion at the WIG annual meeting in December after the Nashville Civil War show.
No joke! Gilmor's Raid 2007 and the Mainstream event held each year at Jerusalem Mills is a totally different animal.
Wait and see!

Frank,
For event recommendations we prefer to deal with proven track records on the AC. When this event becomes something other than a mainstream event let us know, until then please do not bring up mainstream events on the forum. Thank you.
