Early Registration cut-off

Sat 5th
All quiet to day drill cool ... dress parade this eve Colonel Oglesby left us to day ...

Sunday 6th
this morning we was quietly getting ready for inspt. and the long roll beat and we fell in ... our Regt. was in line of battle and they (the Rebels) was right in front us and we had an awful fight but were finally driven back. We left 4 dead out of our Company. Jo Harbin, John Wallace and James West. T. B. Davis .. many wounded. I escaped unhurt. We contested bravely against the odds ... were driven back ... from our camp ..... I fought after our co. & regt. was entirely broken up with 52nd Ohio & 16th Ohio supporting 5th Ohio battery. we have a tremendous fight. They routed us & we rallied again & again and they drove us back at last and at six oclock all quiet. through the night gunboat Lexington fired once in 30 minutes.

Well I was dissappointed to see that the LH demonstration was cancelled due to incredibly soggy ground this weekend, but I still managed to have a great time at Shiloh.

Saturday, I suited up anyway, toured the park, talked to a lot of boy scouts, handed out some hardtack, people took pictures with me, and I walked myself foot-sore. I learned quite a bit from several of the visiting experts that led many guided tours of the battlefield, and picked up O. Edward Cunningham's book, "Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862". Seems an excellent book on the newer theories about Shiloh.

Count on me to be there next year, and lets hope for better weather next time. :)

Ron-glad you had a good time anyway. Jim Butler tried to catch everyone before they left to let them know of the cancellation, but apparently missed you:-).

For those who may wonder- the park cancelled the LH, not the SCAR, due to fear of too much damage to the turf from foot traffic(the area got about 4 inches of rain between Wed. and Fri.)
