    Ron,

Wish I had known you went anyway. I would have come on down and joined you. As it was, I got to move my mother-in-law. Hmmm --do an event or load a rental truck - boy the NPS owes me big time for this one!:)

I left Thursday morning early, to get there with plenty of time to do more exploring on my own before the event, so there was no getting in touch with me by the time the Park Service cancelled the event on Friday. The Park Service was very apologetic and accomodating, and extended me every courtesy for making the trip, so I had a great time anyway. :)

Were you the guy walking around the Visitor Center in federal uniform? It must have been you. My girlfriend and I went down Saturday in modern clothes and only saw one Federal the whole day.

I was the only fully outfitted federal I saw too, so that was likely me. :)

EDIT--I finally made an avatar. Might help, heh

            Boys,

This is one of the very few times you'll ever hear me say this:

"Sorry I missed it this time around, but I'll look forward to enjoying this event next year!"

Jim Butler and SCAR put on a heck of a fine NPS LH at Pittsburg Landing whether it is the small version up by the visitor center or the larger affair by the Hornet's Nest, and, as for me, it is worth the 1,581.46 mile round trip to visit with the "Sibley Convention" from time to time. I understand the 2009 rendition may have a bit of a change up from previous impressions, but that's just what a little birdy told me. That particular little birdy has a pretty impressive record of being right, too.

Meanwhile, I'm still hoping to work the kettles around renowned field chef Jerry Gouge long enough to steal his old family recipe for "Cartridge Box Strap Soup." Heheheh....

                  Leland,

Yes, my friend, it really was the good old rusty brown slops bucket, but after much afterthought, pondering, and useful outhouse cogitation, I'm thinking several men reaching for fish guts and garbage-meant-for-the-sinks as an alternative to the food on the serving line is sending more than just a subliminal message to the cook house. Several individuals pronounced said waste to be "First rate!" Top drawer! Can I have seconds!"

Meanwhile, back at the firepit, that wonderful ham & desiccated potato hash Andrew Batten labored over with quarter inch cubed love, tenderness, reasonably clean digits, and a sharp knife was merely just another nosh to be quickly forgotten, and you'd have thought the flapjacks, butter, and molasses provided by a nice young man cooking in the drizzle was as enticing as a fatal dose of Avian Flu. Tsk, tsk, you fellers sure are finicky eaters.

On the other hand, if you serve ragged, emaciated, freezing cold, disillusioned, local men struggling through the blowing snow drifts of Ice Station Donelson something steaming hot, rib sticking, and delicious (just like Mom made -- well, if Mom was chinking the cabin logs) simply called "mule feed" just one time..... :cry_smile And folks wonder why a couple or three companies are slow to pay their rations fee for the 1st Minnesota add on to Andersburg. Somehow, I think I'm understanding this "Fear Of Food" in a way that makes a certain TV reality show seem tame.
