  • Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

Once again the Star of the West Society is hosting an event at Boonesfield, a village situated around Daniel Boone's last home near Defiance, Missouri. I'm posting this here because at the moment we have a full complement of civilian women and children, but may be able to accommodate a few more men. If any women and children would like to join in, by all means pm me and we'll be glad to put you on the waiting list.

Participants will portray ordinary pro-Union citizens who are caught up in the stirring events of April1861, just after the fall of Ft. Sumter. The men will demonstrate an early-war militia muster, which will include enrolling, marching, drilling, an officer election, foot races, wrestling matches, and a target shooting contest with prizes.

In mid-April 1861 the U.S. War Department had not yet made weapons and uniforms available to Missouri, and pro-southern Gov. Claiborne F. Jackson had refused Secretary of War Simon Cameron’s request for 4,000 Missouri volunteers. So those who volunteered for service after the outbreak of the secession crisis had to join the Missouri Home Guard. The men will be dressed in civilian clothing and will carry civilian weapons. Some will be going about their everyday occupations until recruiters issue the call for volunteers; others will have traveled from surrounding farms and communities to participate in the militia muster. Women and children will be doing their chores at home and outdoors, but they will also help prepare a potluck picnic for the men, which was a common occurrence in early-war militia musters.

Some of the men will be living in Boonesfield & will join up when the recruiters come to town. Those traveling from outlying farms and villages and will sleep in barns, lean-tos, or tents.

Men who are interested in joining up should contact Mike Kupsch or Terry Sorchy. Women and children should contact me.

Here's the site for the village: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/7109/

Re: Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

Here is a quick update for those of you who may not have heard the latest news about this event:

The new site administration is now charging a modest fee for participants. Anyone staying in a shop or house will be asked to pay $7.50 for the weekend. The site admins are also asking that all those who are staying in the buildings provide their names and contact info, for insurance reasons. Please pm or email this info to me if you haven't already done so.

Anyone staying in one of the lean-tos, barns, or sleeping in a tent will be asked to pay $5.00. You'll be able to register on site -- you don't need to send me a reg form.

The site administration has instituted these new regulations to help preserve the buildings, cover the cost of firewood, candles, sanitation, etc. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to pm or email me.

I believe there may still be some spaces for men who want to join up; if you are interested, please contact Terry Sorchy or Frank Aufmuth, both of whom are members of this forum. At this point we have enough civilians, but if you'd like to be placed on a wait list, we can certainly contact you if anything opens up.

We've received official approval for the live-round target shooting contest. If you're interested in participating, please let Frank know.

    Thanks,

Re: Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

We can have a lot of fun with this.
The scenario at this point is we are portraying a town/county militia before being mustered and supplied. I believe the Boone Home is in St. Charles County, Missouri.

As part of our militia impressions we will drill by Scott's and have a company (LIVE FIRE) Target Practice on Saturday. Safety will be of utmost importance on the fireing line and there will be an "instructor" overseeing the firing line. However I could use some help and we could use a few more experienced men. If you are interested please IM me.

At the same time we will be getting our methods out of the period manuels.
Weapons must be pre-1860 military rifle muskets, Smoothbore, or civilian rifles or shotguns. Due to the time involved with keeping this safe and the room available for the shooting range shooting distances will be approximately 150 and 225 yards. I know the manuels call for more distant targets but I know for a fact that our back drop is about 200 yards down range. These ranges come out of Gilhams but I will consult Scott's and the 1865 Customs of service. More details will follow.

It would help us organizers greatly if those of you that are coming would bring your own target. Targets should be a board 6' high by approx. 22" wide.

Re: Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

Well the event date is coming upon us and we need to know a few things.
First, some have expressed wishes of being towns people and some as travelers.
We need to know who will be the towns folk and what your name, proffesion and skills are at the event. Remember prior to the word of the militia being formed, we have to have a functioning town.
Also who will the travelers be? How many of you and please make sure you have a life story thought up. We are going to try to keep this as much as an immersion event as possible.
There should be plenty of room in the barn, carpenters shop, spanish fort, summer kithchen, lean to's etc.. to house all the travelers. Tents for this event would not be acceptable as the militia has not been formed or mustered in yet.
Like Frank said, we need ALL that are coming to live fire to bring targets. We also need tyo know who is planning on firing live. Bring about 20 live rounds and 20 blank rounds.
We will have a drill once the company is formed but that may take awhile. Remember that we first need to discuss if we even want to go and fight. Then if its agreed on, who and how many will lead us. Prepare to have your best stump speeches thought up boys.
Food: Bring what you will need for food for the weekend. Please bring one thing, i.e pickles, bread, pickled eggs etc... to pass at the picnic. If you wish to, package some sundry items up and give them to Deb Hyland the store proprietor. Then just go purchase them(mock) when you need them.
Also the summer kitchen will be there for anyone to cook at. It's huge and beutiful, take advantage of it.
We are making this a very spontaneous event at the event but we have to make sure we are prepared prior to it.
This is an event where you can actually test your 1860's skills in a fully functioning town invironment, and be a nineteenth citizen for a couple days.
        Lets Keep it Real!
        Please respond ASAP.
        Cheers:D
        Terry Sorchy

Re: Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

Just a quick addition to Terry's excellent post -- we do have this information for all of the people who will be living in the houses. We only need to hear from those men who are planning to participate in the militia muster & haven't yet registered.

As of this writing, the residents of Boonesfield are all set and registered, and I have all your info. So no need to worry.

As Terry points out, though, there are still a few spaces left in some of the buildings for those men who want to portray Boonesfield residents, and there's space in the barn and other outbuildings for the men who are coming from outlying farms. As I understand it, Terry and Frank would rather not have tents pitched on the town common. If any guys want to join up at this point, please get in touch with Terry or Frank immediately. We have promised a final head count to the site administration by April 1.

The main issue is for the militia members to make sure they know where they'll be staying & to be sure they have their targets. Please confirm your accommodations, food, targets, etc. with either Terry or Frank.

          Thanks!

                    Targets

For gentlemen participating as militia members you will need:
                    1. Something to shoot
                    2. ammunition
                    -or-
                    3. lead and bullet mold
                    4. Targets
I've looked through Steve Abolt's Reprint of Scott's, Gilham's, and the
Abstract of Infantry Tactics dated 1830.
We will go with The Militia Abstract for targets because this gives the most specific directions for a target.
Here's a description of the target:
5'10" high by 22 inches in breadth, and painted white; it will be marked by three black stripes drawn horizontally across, one at the top, the second at the middle, and a third equi-distant from the first and second; the centre stripe having in its centre a bull's eye, eight inches in diameter, surrounded, at two inches distance, by a circle one inch broad.

You may use a variety of materials. Boards can be had at this dimension or according to Gilham's you could use an old cotton sheet with a simple frame and a target with the same dimensions above can be made.
The different manuals give different numbers of shots varying from 3-6.
The 1830's abstract suggests 6 shots the results of which will be kept in a "company book."

Re: Missouri Militia Muster, April 25-27

Just a few quick reminders I've been asked to post --

First, if you are planning to eat at Mr. Smith's Inn, let Terry Sorchy know as soon as possible so that he'll know how much food to bring. He would like everyone to bring correct change. He's only running his Inn for the participants, not for spectators, so please hand over your money in a low-key fashion.

Transactions at the Mercantile will be handled as per usual -- on a 10-1 ratio & on a credit arrangement. If there's anything you'd like to sell please get in touch with Deborah Hyland (she's a member of this forum) & be sure to give her a printed price list / inventory. As in the past she has final say on what goes into her store.

Don't forget to bring some letters or packages for the postal delivery!

Oh, and if you are participating in the live round target shoot, don't forget to bring your target.

Also, if you plan to attend the Sunday church service (which I hope is the case for all you hardened sinners) then please bring some period money for the collection. You can get more info about this event & find appropriate stamps and period money here:

Finally, some exciting news -- we're going to have a period Telegraph Office in Mr. Snyder's Printing Shop. Jeremy(otherwise known as Hoosier) will be running the presses, and Michael Kupsch will receive & send telegraphs on his authentic machine. Don't forget to loaf about and annoy these gentlemen in correct period fashion. As I understand it, printer's shops and telegraph offices were prime loafing ground for ne'er-do-wells.

                      See you all soon!
