I have been asked by the director of the South Union (KY) Shaker Village to assist him with a Shaker Conference that is tentatively scheduled for the last weekend in April '08. This conference is an academic conference that will have participants from around the country, many supporters and donors to the preservation and operation of the village. Tommy Hines, the director, asked me to help him coordinate programs for the event, which will focus on the South Union Shakers and the Civil War.
I am putting this information out to the AC community to ask for anyone who would be interested in assisting with this program. The events are still in the planning stages, but will most likely be first person interpretations of early war Federal soldiers traveling through the village and possibly some Shaker civilians. Input from participants will be welcomed! There are a couple of surviving journals that will assist in developing scenarious and programs. Research will be provided, but the participant must be willing to delve into the role in order to portray it convincingly to the attendees. This isn't a sit and "pose" type event, it will be very interactive with the attendees. There will most likely be no firing of weapons, etc.
Preliminary scenarios are Federal troops entering the village and contacting the Shakers to inquire about forage, etc. This will most likely take place Friday night by candlelight or torchlight. Saturday would be a more "static" interaction display time to educate and answer questions.
The village will most likely provide at least a meal or two to the participants (original Shaker Tavern with excellent cooking) as well as possibly lodging in the area, if not camping.
South Union Shaker Museum is located approx. 12 miles west of Bowling Green, KY, just off US Hwy 68. The museum / village can be seen at www.shakermuseum.com
Those with a strong interest in interacting with the public (civilian and military) and interest in Shaker history are encouraged to contact me at mcutley@yahoo.com.
