Re: 145th Battle of Resaca (May 15-17) - Campaigner Battalion

The companies are starting to really fill out for our Campaigner Battalion. If registrations continue to come in like they have been we will be able to field six properly sized companies. Keep those registrations coming. I have posted updates to the website.

Re: 145th Battle of Resaca (May 15-17) - Campaigner Battalion

I would like to make a suggestion for this event.

While I enjoyed the last one we did as Federal immensely, in many ways it seemed we fell into the mainstream habit more than the authentic. Lots of sitting around, folks wandering off to sutler row all through the day, goofing off, not running our camps like they would have been historically, etc.

For this one, if we are to be 'different' than the streamers I would suggest we run the battalion and companies like we would at a typical authentic event. Let's run guard duty at night and camp sentries during the day. Let's have more company/ battalion drill etc. In short, let's try to duplicate what the real guys would have been doing in that situation and do the stuff we do that makes us different than the typical mainstream unit.

I am working to recruit some mainstreamers to attend this event. I want them to experience what makes this side of the hobby different than the one they are on. Even if they don't come, we will be seen by many CS mainstream units and I'd just like them to see a difference.

It's not just about kit anymore - many mainstreamers have gear that rivals the best on the authentic side. The real differences are found in what we do and how we do it.

Just my two cents worth - which may only be worth about a half cent in this economy.

          Mike,
I could not agree more and have already been thinking along those lines. We certainly want to set the example and do it right. I am planning to have periods of company and battalion drill. Also if what I am hear from Hunter Poythress are correct we will be setting picket's Saturday night and manning a defensive line. Rest assured we will be running a military camp regardless.

I am currently trying to get that information from Scott so that it can be reposted on the Armory Guards or WIG websites.
Forgive me for butting in boys, but if you go to www.archive.org and put Scott's old url into The Wayback Machine, you should get access to the archives of most of his information depending upon how he had it posted.

Resaca is a wonderful site, but they grow chiggars there the size of waterbugs! Better be eating your garlic to keep them at bay. And I won't even mention the snakes I heard live in the works and like to come out at night. :D

Thanks to the suggestion from Duchess Martin, I have begun to rebuild the 10th Texas website that was originally created by Scott McKay. This is still very much a work in progress but I have gotten many of the rosters, battle reports, and letters up now. Please bear with me as I continue to work on this. Here is the link to the reconstructed site: http://www.armoryguards.org/10thtexas/

Re: 145th Battle of Resaca - Kiev's Company now full

Kiev Thomason's company is the first to reach the 30 man registered mark. Congrats Kiev!! Good work on recruiting.

In order to keep realistic historic strengths, I am closing registration for his company. There is still plenty of room in the other five companies so continue to get those registrations in. In case you were not aware all companies will be limited to 30 men (privates, cpls and sgts).

                      Guys,
Just a quick update. So far we already have one company full, Kiev Thomason's, another 2/3 full, Pat Craddock's, and the others coming along. Get your registration in before your company of choice is full.

Someone has asked me a question about the use of Rammers at this event. We will not be using rammers to load at this event. The overall event safety rules and guidelines do not allow the use of rammers for loading.

Re: 145th Battle of Resaca (May 15-17) - Campaigner Battalion

                            Gentlemen,
Just a reminder, pre-event registration closes for the Campaigner Battalion on May 1st. Anyone that registers after that date will not be allowed to draw rations and may not get to participate in a couple of the surprises we have planned. So get those registrations in soon so you don't miss out.

For those that might be interested in seeing how the troop positions for the battle overlay the modern terrain, I found a website hosted by Georgia Tech with interactive maps. Here is the link: http://civilwar2.arch.gatech.edu/website/resaca1. If you are using a dial up connection do not try the link unless you like to wait.

From this site you will see that the 10th Texas was positioned just west of what is now I-75 with Cleburn's men.

145th Battle of Resaca - Campaigner Battalion Update

I hope this message finds everyone enjoying their Easter weekend. I wanted to take a quick moment to everyone up to speed on where we stand with the Resaca Campaigner Battalion.

I am excited to say we have 108 men registered for our Battalion excluding the staff. (click here to see who is registered) This is great!! There is still time to register with pre-event registration for our Campaigner Battalion closing on May 1st.

Don't forget each company will be capped at 30 men to keep close to historic company sizes for the 10 Texas. Capt. Thomason's company has one spot open due to a cancellation. Capt. Hancock has only 8 spots left and Capt. Craddock has only 9 spots left. Captains Butler and Hunter are almost half way full. So what does this mean? It means that if you have a specific company you want to be in you better get your registrations in soon before it fills up.

Though pre-event registration closes on May 1st, since this is a mainstream event walk ons will be welcome. Those that do not pre-register will not be able to draw rations or take part in the planned battlefield tour. They will also miss out on a couple of other surprises we have planned. Everyone taking part in this battalion, whether pre-registered or walk on will be expected to meet the uniform guidelines. We will have an inspection Saturday morning as part of morning formation. You can click here to view the guidelines. Items are listed in order of preface.

We don't want folks to be scaried off due to missing items. I am sure we can provide loaner gear to anyone in need. Make sure to contact your company commander if you need help.

To help folks prepare for this event, I have recreated the 10th Texas website that was created by Scott McKay. It includes rosters, ordinance reports, letters, battle reports, and more. I encourage everyone to take a look at this site when looking to put together their impression. There is a wealth of information. Here is a link to the reconstructed site: http://www.armoryguards.org/10thtexas/.

Lastly, Herb and I visited the event site last weekend. For those that have not attended this event, the site is a good one. It is on the northeast end of the original battlefield. So we will be on the original ground which always adds to an event. Looks like Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning we will be setting pickets and working on a defensive position. So we need anyone that has implements such as shovels, picks, axes, hatchets, and so on to bring them. You will not have to carry them through out the event. I have been told there will be a period wagon that we can use to bring us the implements when we need them. Also we will not be camping in a fixed area. We will be camping near the main CS camp friday night. Satuday we will be camping near the main battlefield.

Well that is about it for now. I look forward to seeing many of you next weekend at Race to Knoxville. As always the WIG staff and I are here to serve you. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you. Till we all meet in the field again may you all stay safe.
