      Re: Cumberland Gap Living History

I have 12 committed to my Living Exhibit for this event. Two are those are unsure if they will be able to make it. I have companies assigned, however, nothing is set in stone. Basically what i am doing is letting one person be the ramrod for the group. Once I get the whole crew assembled, I will send you an e-mail containing everything the park expects.
Also, there will be several free gifts drawn out of a hat for those who participate in this part of the event. I don't want to ruin the expense, but they will be of use to anyone in the hobby. Just a token of my appreciation!

            Re: Cumberland Gap Living History

            Shane,
That is a very good question. We are looking for someone to portray the folks from General George Morgan's evacuation and retreat from Cumberland Gap (of course pre-evac.). His command was as follows:

            7th Division Army of Ohio

24th Brigade - Brig. Gen. Samuel P. Carter
            49th Indiana-Lt. Col. James Keigwin
            7th Kentucky-Col. T.T.Garrard
1st Tennessee- Col. Robert K. Byrd
2nd Tennessee- Col. James P.T. Carter

25th Brigade - Brig. Gen. James G. Spears
3rd Tennessee- Col. Leonidas C. Houk
            4th Tennessee- Col. Robert Johnson
5th Tennessee- Col. James T. Shelly
6th Tennessee- Col. Joseph A. Cooper

            26th Brigade - Col. John F. DeCourcy
22nd Kentucky- Col. Daniel W. Lindsey
16th Ohio- Lt. Col. George W. Bailey
42nd Ohio- Col. Lionel A. Sheldon

27th Brigade - Brig. Gen. Absalom Baird
            33rd Indiana- Col. John Coburn
            14th Kentucky- Col. John Cochran
19th Kentucky- Col. William J. Landrum

Artillery - Capt. Jacob T. Foster
7th Michigan- Capt. Charles H. Lamphere
9th Ohio- Lt. Leonard P. Barrows
1st Wisconsin- Lt. John D. Anderson
            Siege Battery- Lt. Daniel Webster

We have some original correspondence from the 49th Indiana written during occupation of the Gap and the portrayal will be the encampment discussed in those letters. Again, if you have a personal interest in one of the other groups under Morgan's command (possibly a particular ancestor you wish to portray or a particular unit) contact me and the impression can certainly be adjusted. Our target is simply to show folks what soldiers serving at the Gap looked like...the particulars are very flexible as long as we can document their occupation. Hope this helps. If you have more questions let me know!

It is rather long...I'd have to go to the park to open it up exactly. I can tell you that there are between 50 and 75 folks registered (great since our goal was around 100). I will try to post a list before the end of the weekend.

                  Just a quick bump....
We are looking for a great group of federals who would be interested in attending the living history to simply drill and set up a great authentic camp! I've got some volunteers but i'm hoping to find some folks who do it frequently. If interested, shoot me a PM!

I do have one but posting it is a problem as I do not have a virtual copy. I am sure the park does however. I just sent a message to the ranger in charge of the event and asked for a virtual copy of all participants. I will post as soon as it is sent to me.

I want to personally thank everyone who was able to come out. The official count on the visitors to the park during the living history was 7579. We believe there were actually more as many pulled into the bottom of the parking lot and entered the exhibits through the lower fencing. I hope you enjoyed your weekend. I think we certainly made an impact on the community. The park was very pleased with the event and I have recieved several great comments on a lot of your exhibits. Thank you very much for all that you did!
